TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Around the 2012 Republican National Convention and its host city with journalists from The Associated Press bringing the flavor and details to you:
___
TAMPA-BOUND
Mitt Romney will be on the way to Florida on Tuesday ? the day his wife's scheduled to give her speech at the Republican National Convention.
The presumptive GOP nominee for president will arrive in Tampa on what's effectively the first day of the convention. Although it was called to order Monday, it was immediately adjourned until Tuesday because of Tropical Storm Isaac.

___
POLLS: A TIGHTER RACE
Pre-convention polling has wrapped, and neither candidate for president begins the race to Nov. 6 with a head start.
President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney begin the campaign's high season about even. Modest advantages for Obama had begun to look like the norm, but four new surveys in the last week along with Gallup's daily tracking poll found a tighter race with no discernible edge for either candidate.
An Associated Press-GfK poll puts the contest at 47 percent Obama to 46 percent for Romney among registered voters. Fox News, NBC/Wall Street Journal, Washington Post-ABC News and the Gallup tracker all report similar findings among that group.
Other common themes across this wave of polling include Obama maintaining his advantage as the more likable or empathetic candidate, while Romney continues to have his strongest performance against the president on handling the economy.

___
VIEWPOINTS: PROTESTS
One viewpoint, from Tampa's police chief, Jane Castor: Protesters around the GOP convention can say and do whatever they wish "as long as they don't cross the line into criminal behavior."
And another, from Cara Jennings, a voter outreach organizer from Palm Beach County, Fla.: "They've militarized Tampa."
So far, protests have been muted and only two people have been arrested. That's in stark contrast to four years ago, when hundreds of protesters were arrested at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn. In Tampa, protesters, who for months planned to converge on Tampa to showcase their gripes and messages, have been peaceful and small in number.

STAR-SPANGLED ENCORE
He performed on the "Today" show, sang the funeral Mass for Tim Russert and belted out the national anthem for the Republicans during their last convention in 2008. On Tuesday, New Jersey-born tenor Philip Alongi Jr. is back in the political spotlight when he again sings "The Star-Spangled Banner" for the Republicans.
The young Alongi has performed more than a dozen operatic roles across the United States, including productions of Carmen, Madama Butterfly and La Traviata. Since his last convention appearance, Alongi has released the debut albums "Heritage," a collection of songs and arias of Italy, and "New Life: Songs of Faith," a collection of sacred works spanning eras from the 17th century to today.

NEW JUST TRY GETTING HOME
Many Republican National Convention attendees put up with delayed, diverted or canceled flights on their way to Tampa, some blamed on Tropical Storm Isaac. They can expect a bumpy ride home, too.
Airlines are already warning about the crush of passengers heading out of town at week's end. Delta Air Lines is advising travelers to arrive at Tampa International Airport at least two hours early to deal with security, crowds and assorted delays "outside of our control."

TRUMP'S TEASE
For weeks, showman Donald Trump has been doing the slow tease about his plans for the GOP convention.
He was asked to speak, he says, but decided to do something "bigger." Something "very, very major." Something "hopefully quite amazing."
Trump was in Sarasota, Fla., over the weekend to accept an award, but headed back to New York when Monday's convention activities were pared down due to Tropical Storm Isaac.
Does that mean no more surprise?
"The big surprise is still going to happen, so stay tuned," promises Trump spokesman Michael Cohen.
GOP officials are playing along. Says convention planner Russ Schriefer: "Just because he isn't here, doesn't mean he's not going to show up."

His rivals may be convening in Florida this week. But at the White House, President Barack Obama is getting ready for his big moment next week ? at the Democratic National Convention.

DOG FIGHT
At least one Tampa, Fla., rally's gone to the dogs already.
Amid a protest objecting to the way Mitt Romney transported the family pet on a years-ago vacation ? inside an animal carrier strapped atop the car ? a woman stepped into the crowd and began loudly defending the GOP candidate.
"What Mitt Romney did to his dog, his dog liked and it was safe and enjoyable," said Barbara Seidenberg. As several canine-toting protesters tried to shout her down, she pressed on.
"Barack Obama was a 10-year-old boy when he ate dog," she said, apparently referring to a passage in one of Obama's books in which he writes about eating dog meat as a boy in Indonesia. "But he was a grown man when he decided his whole persona and his life was going to be committed to turning this country into less of a country so that ? "
She was drowned out by a protester yelling "Obama 2012!"
A shouting match ensued, and Seidenberg stormed off.

CAIN WEIGHS IN
At one point, he was a serious challenger for the GOP nomination. But Herman Cain says he's not upset about being excluded from the list of speakers at the Republican National Convention this week.
Cain's 9-9-9 tax plan helped him carve out a unique niche in the primary, with some polls showing him moving toward taking the lead in the fall. But allegations of sexual harassment derailed his candidacy.
Cain is making the rounds in Tampa. He tells CNN that he has met one-on-one with presumptive nominee Mitt Romney on at least three occasions in recent months. He says he's not upset about his lack of a speaking slot because other black Republican speakers needed the exposure more than he did.
Cain says the allegations that derailed his candidacy were part of a coordinated attack, but he didn't say whether the effort was undertaken by a particular Republican or a Democratic campaign: "I don't want to say anything that might jeopardize what we might do in the future in terms of exposing what happened."

ISAAC'S UGLY, BUT NO KATRINA
Isaac is sweeping up the Gulf Coast just in time for the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans.
A tropical storm expected to strengthen into a hurricane, Isaac could prove punishing. But it's nowhere near as powerful as the bruiser that struck on Aug. 29, 2005.
At one point, Katrina reached Category 5 status with winds over 157 mph. It made landfall as a Category 3 with a huge storm surge. Levee failures caused catastrophic flooding.
This time, Federal Emergency Management Agency officials say the updated levees around New Orleans are equipped to handle storms stronger than Isaac. City officials had no plans to order evacuations, instead telling residents to hunker down and make do with the supplies they have.
"It's going to be all right," said New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu.
Isaac promises a soaking but not much more for Tampa, Fla., where the Republican National Convention was pushed back a day just in case.

SAY IT IN SONG
Why say it when you can sing it?
Most speeches at this week's Republican National Convention are set to a particular theme for the day. "We Built It," is Tuesday's mantra, a poke at Obama's "You didn't build that" line at a July campaign event.
A convention entertainer will sing about it. Guitarist Lane Turner rehearsed his tune "I Built It" in a sparsely filled convention hall Monday.
"I built it with my own two working hands," goes the chorus. "Yeah I built it. No help from Uncle Sam."
Obama's campaign argues that his words, meant to stress the value of government in fostering infrastructure, were taken out of context.

VOIGHT ON OBAMA
The Virginia delegation served up some celebrity with its political breakfast Monday.
Jon Voight, the Academy Award-winning actor better known to today's moviegoers as the father of Angelina Jolie, joined Tagg Romney, son of the presidential candidate, to talk government spending, media coverage and President Barack Obama's record at the delegation's morning session.
Delegate Erin Smith of Leesburg, Va., says Voight complained that the media wasn't providing balanced coverage of the two candidates. She says Voight also argued that on several issues Obama campaigned on, he acted differently in office.

___
TEMPEST IN A TOTE BAG?
Maybe Mitt Romney assumes GOP delegates won't read all the way to page 177 of his book, "No Apology," included in their gift bags.
If they do, they'll find an uncomfortable sentence for Romney ? a sentence dropped from the paperback edition. It alludes to his push, as Massachusetts governor, to require all residents to obtain insurance as part of health care reforms.
"We can accomplish the same thing for everyone in the country, and it can be done without letting government take over health care," Romney wrote. That sounds a lot like the health care mandate in "Obamacare," which Romney now vows to undo.
In the paperback edition, the passage refers only to preventing a government takeover of health care. Publications including the Washington Examiner took note of the hardback's presence at the convention.
Of course, hardbacks make nicer gifts. And the swag bags don't include much else ? mints and sunglasses, mainly.

HURRICANE GOP?
Dorothy Crockett says she wasn't about to let Isaac, the tropical storm gaining hurricane strength, keep her from a minute of the Republican National Convention.
The Arkansas spitfire ? decked out in red, white and blue from her jacket to her earrings ? was among a couple hundred delegates who showed up for the abbreviated opening Monday despite the cancellation of the speaking schedule.
"At my age I have never experienced a hurricane," the 77-year-old from northeast Arkansas says. "The only hurricane I want to experience is the Republicans taking over the House, the Senate and the White House. This is the Republican hurricane."

CHOICE SEATING
Mitt Romney's adopted state of Massachusetts is rewarded at the Republican National Convention with prime seating ? just feet from where he'll accept the nomination this week. It's a rare honor for Massachusetts, a Democratic bastion used to being relegated to the back of the hall.
Kerry Healy, who served as lieutenant governor under Romney, is at the front of the front next to others who helped his rise. It reflects, Healy says, "a new thing for Massachusetts to have a Republican nominee for president. We have had plenty of the other kind."
Also in choice seats: delegates from battleground states of Virginia and Ohio as well as Romney's birth state of Michigan and vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan's home state of Wisconsin.

Dear Dr. Pat:
I?have read the stories of reunions at?this site for several years now, and really enjoyed the series this summer.? It seems that everyone else has a family where the brothers and sisters are happy to see each other and make these special times as we grow older meaningful?apparently without envy or strife.? I am the youngest of eight children . . . the ?oops? baby, younger by eight years than my youngest brother.? My father died when I was ten and my mother just withdrew from life.? I was left alone with a severely depressed mother, and my brothers and sisters knew that I ran the house, did the shopping, and cooked our meals.? They came by for dinners I planned and cooked, but never asked how I was or offered to include me in any event that I wasn?t in charge of.? I became a trained chef and have been in the hospitality industry my entire life.? I am 45 now and never married, because the life of a chef is not conducive to creating a stable long-term relationship.? But I love my friends and our shared passion for food, wine, and entertaining.
I look forward to and dread family reunions.? Both of our parents are dead now and I live in the family home.? When we have family events, I am always the hostess:? the big summer reunion, Thanksgiving, Christmas, birthday parties.? I don?t mind creating the meals and making these events memorable, but? I always end up fighting with my older sisters about what I have chosen.? We? even disagree about the table settings. And they don?t know anything about entertaining.? Everyone loves the food and the pretty table, but there is always tension in the kitchen and during the meal.? After dinner, I am left to clean up.? I am really angry that no one appreciates what I do to keep the family together.? Why do grown-up brothers and sisters?who make up a ?family,? after all?continue to act as if they are children?
?Sarah
Dear Sarah:
No analyst ever described families any better than Tolstoy, who famously wrote, ?Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.? I can understand how the lifetime of parental abandonment and neglect and the decision on your part to provide an essential component to nurturing for both yourself and others through the creation of beautiful meals was your childhood attempt to get some attention and reward from your mother and siblings. It is possible that your ownership of the family home and your in-charge attitude in the kitchen and the dining room engenders envy and other toxic emotions in both your siblings and in you as well.
?
I have asked Dr. Cecilia Ford?a clinical psychologist in New York City who has great experience in working with patients who still carry burdens from family-of-origin relationships?to write about your question.? I would like to suggest that you may benefit, at 45, from some time with a therapist.? Do remember that we can never change others, but we can change how we feel . . . about our past, ourselves, and our relationships.?Then we may be able to change how we act.? ?You may decide that it is time to let your other siblings entertain the family.? I am sure these meals won?t be as perfect as?those you would make, but that is a change in attitude that you can control.? And over time you may decide that creating a ?family? of those friends and colleagues from that special world of ?foodies? is a way to have the real family that you want.
Best,
Dr. Pat

Guilt, Unburied Hatchets, Toxic Relationships: Sibling Rivalry in Midlife
By Dr. Cecilia M. Ford
No matter how old we are, the template of our early family relationships stays with us throughout our lifetime. Naturally, we mature, develop, and gain both insight into ourselves and wisdom about others. As a result, many aspects of relationships become smoother and more peaceful. One group that remains often troublesome is siblings.
Conflict between siblings is so ubiquitous that I would guess that on a word-association test most people would say ?rivalry? when prompted by the word ?sibling.? But what?s more surprising is how much of the conflict continues as we age. Below are five common issues that persist, often well into mid-life (and beyond):
?Rivalry
Rivalry is by far the most common, persistent, and resistant to change of the sibling issues. Sometimes it is the result of an accident of birth order (e.g., two sibs of the same sex and close in age). Many times the rivalry is exacerbated by real family dynamics? (e.g., ?Mom really did like you best?). Most often it is a very complex combination of many factors?including, but not limited to, those above.
Unfortunately, parents can favor one child over another without being aware they are doing so. The difference in treatment can be subtle, but the effects can be dramatic.
Sometimes the rivalry can wax and wane over the course of adulthood as we learn that life can favor one person over another, and our rival may come in for her share of hard knocks. But that may not be the case. Furthermore, the competitive spirit can be lodged so deep that we are not appeased by our relative good fortune, but, rather, continue to feel threatened no matter what the circumstances.
These feelings not only disrupt our relationships with our adult siblings but also have the power to be transferred onto others in our life. If you have a history with a sibling that is laced with unresolved feelings of competitiveness and its ?evil twin,? envy, chances are that these? issues pop up in your other relationships as well.
?Failure to Separate
On the other hand, some siblings stay close as they grow older. This is fine until it presents a problem for creating independent relationships. A typical scenario involves one sib?s wanting to move on (often with a romantic partner), which upsets a long-held balance between two very close siblings. This can set up a seething rivalry and resentment between the new spouse and the ?left-out? sibling that is never fully resolved, even after the second sibling is married herself.
?Guilt
There are many, many reasons why siblings feel guilty toward one another. There can be wounds, real or imagined, that we have inflicted on one another. More often, guilt is experienced by a sibling who has triumphed, been favored, or won the genetic lottery in some way that has left the other(s) at a disadvantage. Even though this is not (usually) the winning sibling?s fault, she can feel guilty anyhow, because, consciously, or unconsciously, we all prefer to win rather than lose.
This problem is especially severe in families that have a child who is significantly disadvantaged in some way?e.g., mentally or physically handicapped. The healthy sibling not only feels guilty for ?winning,? but also guilty for feeling anger and resentment over all the extra trouble, expense, attention, etc. created by the sibling?s handicap.
People who have grown up in these kinds of families often have persistent feelings of ambivalence about winning, as well as guilty feelings that are difficult to allay, even if the troubled sibling?s situation has improved.
?Unburied Hatchets
This issue, along with its corollary, Family Secrets, allows siblings to persist in a toxic ?time capsule.? As long as the past injury is never brought to light, no one has to face whatever painful truth is being hidden. If a sib is still angry many years later because her sister seated her at the wrong table at her niece?s wedding, she may be using this to shield much more long-simmering resentments that haven?t been aired. But if the family has tacitly all agreed that ?We Don?t Talk About That,? our only choice is to go on pretending that these violent feelings were brought on by the seating chart.
?Toxic Relationships That Can?t Be Changed
There are some sibling relationships that are so toxic, so resistant to change or to improvement, that a time may come when we should consider cutting loose. Just because someone is a blood relative doesn?t mean that she is your lifelong curse. Some people have genuine sociopathic tendencies. Some are so angry at you that they genuinely mean you harm. Others, like chronic addicts or debtors, may have come to you for help many times and squandered it. The benefit of the wisdom that comes with age is that we may be able to make more reasoned judgments about these troubled siblings than when we were younger. For example, the addict who has used your cash to gamble or drink over and over may not seem worthy of your children?s college funds any more. Furthermore, your experience is telling you that your ?help? is not helping. It can often take many years and be very difficult to decide to cut loose, but in some cases there is no other road to improvement.
Sibling issues can lie dormant and then re-emerge during holiday gatherings, family reunions, weddings, and funerals. The most dangerous ground of all is the inheritance. If the parents? wills are not very well and fairly written, they will always be breeding grounds for whatever latent pathology the siblings harbor toward one other.
On a brighter note, siblings can draw closer as their parents pass away, finding strength in each other through their link to their common past.

I hate the clich? saying that ?Rome wasn?t built in a day.? We know. If it's impossible by today's technology to build a city in a day, then it is easy to infer it couldn't be done 2,000 years ago. But apparently, today it is possible to produce a film in just two days, and Austin's 48 Hour Film Project proves it.
The 48 Hour Film Project kicks off on Friday, August 24 at 6:00 p.m. as chosen teams start scrambling to make their 48-hour (duh) deadline for the annual competition. They must also use the line of dialog provided by the the competition in their film, and all creative aspects of the film must be done in the allotted time (script writing, filming, rehearsing, costume design, editing, sound, rendering and outputting).
This is no ?freestyle? endeavor for the teams participating: They must meet the two-day deadline down to the exact minute, or the film does not qualify for judging in the competition.
If this sounds like a can of corn, it isn?t. According to the producer of Austin?s 48 Hour Film Project, Noelle Schonefeld, ?typically, one to two teams don?t make it in the race-to-the-finish.? Independence Brewery and Balcones Distillery will be on hand at the ?pretty fun blow out? party after the "race-to-the-finish," which takes place Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at Vuka Co-Op.
Vuka Co-Op and 48 Hour Film Project are seemingly the perfect pairing. The brand new creative space off of South 1st St. houses one of the most beautiful interiors we have seen in this city. The 6,800 square foot warehouse is accented with low-light chandeliers and beautiful furniture, while still managing to steer clear of the upscale ambiance that is the antithesis of Austin style.
This year?s crop of 42 teams (six more than last year) consists of small groups of families to teams of 85 professionals working together to produce the most creative, insightful films in only 48 hours.
According to Schonefeld, 48 Hour is ?more about the process of producing a great film rather than the film itself. Any filmmaker can benefit and learn no matter the experience level.?
Schonefeld and partner Christina Martell have worked night and day ?as a salute to the film and arts community in Austin." When asked if their were any difficulties in organizing 48 Hour this year Schonefeld replied, ?We haven?t had time to stop and think about difficulties, we have a great team with a lot of enthusiasm and we know it is going to be great.?

The kick off for 48 Film Festival on Friday evening on the Long Center Terrace. You can join in on the Drop Off party Sunday evening Vuka Co-Op to support the teams as they race to the finish. Check out the full schedule of times and the official rules here.

Background
While a Global Rescue member was working abroad in Qatar, his infant was diagnosed with a rare and life-threatening disease that could not be treated effectively at the local hospitals. The member requested that the infant be transported to a U.S. hospital specializing in the treatment of neonatal cases.
Challenges?
Mission Summary
After talking to an assistance company retained by the father?s employer and being refused transport to the family?s hospital of choice in the U.S., the family contacted Global Rescue who immediately deployed assets to the member?s location. Global Rescue facilitated communication with full translation services among doctors at the Qatari hospital, Global Rescue, and specialists from the receiving hospital to discuss treatment options.
Global Rescue then deployed a specialized neonatal transport team to the patient?s bedside. Within hours of arriving, Global Rescue personnel and the member?s family departed via medically arranged commercial air transport for the United States. Despite winter weather advisories, the transport was able to reach its intended destination in the U.S. where a police escort expedited transport from the airport to the hospital.

Federal authorities have charged 40 people -- including two inmates and a corrections officer -- for running a drug ring through three Indiana prisons.
According to the Associated Press, the indictment unsealed Wednesday in Indianapolis notes the scheme? involved methamphetamine, heroin and other drugs and also alleges prison guards smuggled cellphones and drugs into prisons.
The indictment says that two inmates Oscar Perez and Justin Addler, who are in different prisons made repeated calls to drug dealers in California to arrange for illegal deliveries of drugs to a network of distributors in Indiana, the Indianapolis Star reported.? The deliveries were made in person or through the U.S. Postal Service or UPS, the newspaper notes.
Perez is serving time in prison after being convicted murderer; Addler is a convicted drug dealer, according to the AP.
Correctional officer John Dobbins? is accused of delivering a package containing drugs and a cellphone to an inmate at a third prison in July, according to a federal indictment. While only one corrections officer is charged, the indictment says multiple guards were involved, the AP reported.
Spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's office in Indianapolis Tim Horty in declined to comment on the case.
In a prepared statement, Indiana Department of Correction Commissioner Bruce Lemmon said, "The actions of the small number of any IDOC correctional employees who may have facilitated these illegal activities brings dishonor to them and tarnishes the good name and professionalism of the vast majority of IDOC employees who are dedicated to making our prisons safe and upholding the rule of law."
The FBI are still looking for two people involved in drug ring, said Wendy Osborne, spokeswoman for the bureau in Indianapolis.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Kennard Foster set trials for those involved in the case for Oct. 1. Some of the charges carry a life in prison.

U.S. President Barack Obama threatened Syrian President Bashar al-Assad against using or moving weapons of mass destruction. Obama said the U.S. is preparing a 'range of contingency plans' should Assad ignore his warning.

EnlargePresident?Barack Obama?on Monday threatened U.S. military action against Syrian President?Bashar al-Assad, warning in the strongest terms yet that any attempt to deploy or use chemical or biological weapons would cross a "red line" for the?United States.

Pointing out that he had refrained "at this point" from ordering U.S. military engagement in Syria's bloody conflict, Obama said that there would be "enormous consequences" if Assad failed to safeguard his weapons of mass destruction.
It was Obama's most explicit language to date on the prospects for military intervention, and he warned Syria?not only against using its unconventional weapons, but against moving them in a threatening fashion.
"We have been very clear to the Assad regime, but also to other players on the ground, that a red line for us is (if) we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized," Obama said. "That would change my calculus.
"We cannot have a situation where chemical or biological weapons are falling into the hands of the wrong people," Obama told an impromptu?White House?news conference. He acknowledged he was not "absolutely confident" the stockpile was secure.
Obama said the issue was of concern not only to Washington but also to its close allies in the region, including?Israel.
He said the?United States?was putting together a "range of contingency plans" but offered no details.
The?United States?and its allies are discussing a worst-case scenario that could require tens of thousands of ground troops to go into Syria?to secure chemical and biological weapons sites following the fall of President?Bashar al-Assad's government, U.S. and diplomatic officials told Reuters last week.
These secret discussions assume that all of Assad's security forces disintegrate, leaving chemical and biological weapons sites in Syria?vulnerable to pillaging. The scenario also assumes these sites could not be secured or destroyed solely through aerial bombings, given health and environmental risks.
But a U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity to explain the sensitive discussions, said the?United States?still had no plans to put troops in Syria.
Obama, who is seeking re-election in November, has been reluctant to get the?United States?involved in another war in the?Middle East, even refusing to arm rebels fighting a 17-month-old uprising against Assad.
Syria last month acknowledged for the first time that it had chemical and biological weapons and said it could use them if foreign countries intervene - a threat that drew strong warnings from Washington and its allies.
Western countries and?Israel?have expressed fears chemical weapons could fall into the hands of militant groups as Assad's authority erodes.
Israel?has said that if Syrian-backed Hezbollah guerrillas used the situation to take control of the weapons, it would "act immediately and with utmost force."
"We're monitoring that situation very carefully," Obama said when asked whether he envisioned the possibility of using U.S. forces at least to safeguard Syria's chemical arsenal.
The Global Security website, which collects published intelligence reports and other data, says there are four suspected chemical weapons sites in Syria: north of?Damascus, near?Homs, in Hama and near the?Mediterranean port of Latakia. Weapons it produces include the nerve agents VX, sarin and tabun, it said, without citing its sources.
Obama also used the opportunity to renew his call for Assad to step down.
"The international community has sent a clear message that rather than drag his country into civil war, he should move in the direction of a political transition," Obama said. "But at this point, the likelihood of a soft landing seems pretty distant."
Obama said the?United States?already had provided $82 million in humanitarian assistance for Syrian refugees and "we'll probably end up doing a little bit more" to keep the situation from destabilizing Syria's neighbors.

ISTANBUL (AP) ? A bomb concealed in a vehicle exploded near a police station in southeast Turkey on Monday night, Turkish media reported, killing at least eight people and wounding dozens amid an escalation in fighting between Kurdish rebels and Turkish security forces.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast in Gaziantep, near the Syrian border, where tens of thousands of refugees who have fled the civil war in their country are sheltering in Turkish camps.
Kurdish militants are active in the area, and their fight for autonomy in Turkey's predominantly Kurdish southeast has intensified in recent weeks. The Kurdish rebel group PKK often targets military patrols with roadside bombs and ambushes, and it also has a long record of attacks in civilian areas.
Television footage showed firefighters attempting to douse a fierce blaze that gutted several vehicles. Medics assisted a wounded person on a stretcher, and ambulance sirens wailed as bystanders gathered to survey the wreckage. Some angry men chanted slogans against Kurdish rebels and their jailed leader, Abdullah Ocalan.
NTV television said eight people died and as many as 50 were wounded. Turkey's Anadolu news agency reported the same number of dead, and cited 61 wounded. Reports said explosives in the car, which was parked at a bus stop, were detonated by remote control.
The blast comes at a delicate time for the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which, along with Western and Arab allies, is seeking the ouster of Syrian President Bashar Assad by assisting the Syrian political opposition.
Turkey's foreign minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, was quoted by Hurriyet newspaper on Monday as saying the United Nations should establish refugee camps inside Syria and that his country, already host to nearly 70,000 Syrian refugees, would struggle to cope if the number increases substantially.
Within its borders, the Turkish state has granted more cultural rights to Kurds, who make up some 20 percent of Turkey's population of 75 million, but there is still a great deal of distrust between Ankara and many Kurds.
Turkey also is concerned that the chaos in Syria could lead to a power vacuum that allows Kurdish militants to organize inside Syria to intensify their campaign for self-rule in Turkey's southeast. The Kurdish rebel group PKK already operates from bases in the mountains of northern Iraq, and Turkish jets have periodically conducted bombing raids there.
Turkish forces have staged several military drills along the border with Syria in a show of force.
Last week, a Turkish lawmaker was freed by his Kurdish rebel captors. Huseyin Aygun, a member of parliament from the main opposition party, was kidnapped at a roadblock while touring his precinct in the eastern province of Tunceli.
While rebels have previously kidnapped soldiers, local politicians and tourists, it was the first abduction of a parliament member by the rebels. It came days after the government claimed troops had killed as many as 115 rebels in clashes and ahead of the 28th anniversary of the rebels' first armed attack on Aug. 15, 1984.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. Adults across the U.S. rate not getting enough exercise as the top health concern for children in 2012, according to a new University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health.
In the poll's annual top 10 list, a nationwide sample of adults were asked to identify the top 10 biggest health concerns for kids in their communities. For the first time, not enough exercise was rated by most adults at the top of the list (39 percent). That was followed closely by childhood obesity (38 percent) and smoking and tobacco use (34 percent).
"Childhood obesity remains a top concern, and adults know it is certainly linked to lack of exercise," says Matthew M. Davis M.D., M.A.P.P., director of the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health.
"The strong perception that lack of exercise is a threat to children's health may reflect effective recent public health messages from programs such as First Lady Michelle Obama's 'Let's Move' campaign.
"But lack of exercise offers many more benefits other than weight loss or preventing obesity such as better attention and learning in school and improved sense of well-being," says Davis, associate professor of pediatrics and internal medicine at the U-M Medical School and associate professor of public policy at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy.
The rest of the poll results were:
"The strong connection of many of the top 10 child health concerns to health behaviors among children and adolescents underscores the importance of public programs and communication initiatives for example, those designed to prevent drug abuse, tobacco use, alcohol abuse and teen pregnancy," Davis says.
The poll's results varied based on race/ethnicity. Hispanic adults were more likely to rate childhood obesity first (44 percent), followed by not enough exercise (38 percent), and also rated drug abuse higher than smoking and tobacco use.
Black adults had higher levels of concern about smoking and tobacco use, ranking that most often (43 percent). They also had high levels of concern about racial inequality, ranking it seventh on the list, and gun-related injuries, ranking that ninth.
Black and Hispanic adults both identified sexually transmitted infections as a greater concern for kids in their communities than did white adults.
"Child health varies across communities, and these results emphasize a need for local programs that respect and address community-specific health priorities for youth," Davis says.

The Pussy Riot punk band's harsh sentence drew swift Western condemnation. More important for Putin will be how it influences the views of Russians, especially the elite.
By Fred Weir,?Correspondent / August 18, 2012
One day after three young members of Pussy Riot were sentenced to two years in a penal colony for profaning a Russian Orthodox altar, the controversy over what they did and how the Russian state reacted to it shows every sign of growing.

There seems little doubt that the trial and the harsh sentences handed down to the women will worsen the image of Russia in the West, and particularly the credibility of Vladimir Putin, who has just completed the first 100 days of his third term as president. Many governments, including the United States, have condemned the sentence as disproportionate, and celebrities from Paul McCartney to Madonna have weighed in with their support for the group.
But international opinion can often have a negative impact in Russia. How the trial and its outcome have affected Russian public opinion may play a much bigger role in coming months, as the anti-Putin protest movement returns to the streets after a summer hiatus and the political season begins anew.
Public opinion has remained rather staunchly anti-Pussy Riot since the women were arrested in March. The latest poll, released last week by the independent Levada Center in Moscow, shows little change.
According to the survey, 55 percent of Russians did not have their views of the judicial system altered by the trial; 9 percent said it diminished their trust in courts while 5 percent said it increased it, and 12 percent said they have no faith in the courts to begin with. About 36 percent thought the verdict would be based on the facts of the case; 18 percent thought the verdict would be dictated "from the top." Interestingly, when asked what they thought the punk band's goal was in staging the protest, about 30 percent of respondents said it was "against the church and its role in politics"; 13 percent thought it was "against Putin" and 36 percent said they could not discern the purpose.
More worrisome, from the Kremlin's point of view, is the effect the trial has had on Russia's more educated and influential social strata. Of course the usual suspects ? opposition leaders, artists, liberal intellectuals ? have popped up to protest the treatment of the women, who were kept almost six months in pretrial detention and now face more than a year in the harsh conditions of a Russian penal colony.
But unease over a prosecution that carries such obvious political and religious overtones appears to be spreading far beyond Russia's small liberal and opposition circles.
Former finance minister Alexei Kudrin, a longtime member of Putin's inner circle who was fired by then-President Dmitry Medvedev last year, wrote on his website that the verdict deals "yet another blow to the court system and citizens' trust in it.... The country's image and its attractiveness in the eyes of investors have suffered an enormous damage," he wrote.
