Where Does Google Scholar Fall Short?

Jae Won Joh, MD

Despite being made by a company known for search, Google Google Scholar lacks miserably in features that would aid scientific searches (at least, in the field of medicine). I use this product on a regular basis, and it?s far superior to just about anything else I?ve used in terms of the relevancy of its search results, but it can still be aggravating. Wish list of abilities:

  1. Sort by # of citations a paper has received (high to low). Bonus: sort by # of citations a paper has received per year it?s been in print. Why should I care about a paper from 10 years ago that?s only been cited 3 times? I want the NEJM article that?s been cited 500+ times in the last 2 years alone.
  2. Search within specific impact factor range. Two uses: set IF range high for broad general topics (e.g. breast cancer) to get the tier 1 publications, set IF range lower to seek out specialty journals that may have more specifics on rarer conditions (e.g. pediatric eosinophilic esophagitis).
  3. ?Cites? in addition to ?Cited by? would be epic. When I do a literature review on a topic, I literally type in ?review? as a search term to find the latest review publications. I often want to delve in and read the papers that the review article felt were worthy of citing, but doing so is a giant timesink because I have to type them all in individually.
  4. Make the inclusion of books a non-default option. Seriously? When was the last time a good scientist cited a book instead of the original paper off which the book was written? If I want a book I can just find one off Amazon. There are exceptions, such as in ethics research where much original scholarship is contained within books, but this is a small percentage of research overall.
  5. Make ?[Citation]? a non-default option.I want a link to the paper, not a notice of how cool it is. This is useless to me:
  6. Get rid of all the nonsensical alternative medicine junk. It?s Google Scholar, not Google Quack. I do not appreciate your search results wasting my time with entries from the Himalayan Journal of Alternative Botanical Medicine.

As a professional searcher, the biggest, most complex, most pernicious problem I run into is inconsistent indexing.

Today, I was searching for articles by Cao, Q. That?s easy enough, yes? Oh wait, is that Cao, Qi or Cao, Qu? Is Cao QE the same person? How about Q Cao?

Google Scholar ? and every single other tool we use in our industry ? hasn?t addressed the issue that every journal, every author, every institution, and every indexing tool takes a different view of name, title, source, page.

I was doing pipeline searches this week. We have five tools and a sixth tool specifically to reconcile the other five. How many rows do you think the average drug generates? If you answered ?1-8?, you?d be correct.

Too many links to non-academic sources.

In the last couple months, Google Scholar has started offering me links to Newsweek, random blogs, and church websites.

This goes beyond the alt-med problem that Jae Won Joh mentioned. Linking to journals that make Medical Hypotheses look sober and reliable is one thing. Linking to a blog entry that?s ?cited? by a couple other blog entries, a seminary, and a Digg post ? a goddamn Digg post ? is something else entirely.

The whole point of Google Scholar is to filter out obviously unreliable sources. If I wanted to get links that aren?t academic papers, I?d use Google.

I don?t run into tons of this when I?m not actively looking for it. But seeing decade-old stories from Time Magazine, blogs, and links to creation.com tucked in between real journal articles is infuriating.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 review

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 review

Samsung confounded us last year when it released the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 as a virtual reissue of the original, bumping up the Android version, removing the LED rear camera flash and rearranging the dual speaker placement. So what's new in the Galaxy Tab 3? Nothing much, it turns out. You've got the same 1,280 x 800 display, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage and IR blaster as on the last-gen model, although the processor has been swapped for a dual-core 1.6GHz Intel Z2560 running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. So where do we go from here? How do we judge a tablet refresh that's merely pretending at being an update? We live with it for a bit, use it as a stand-in for our TV remote, e-reader and primary source of streaming media consumption, that's how. Read on as we dissect the $399 Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 to find out if it's worth the fuss.

One Thousand Chinese Protest Against Broadcast Towers

Over one thousand residents of Changsha, a city in China?s central Hunan Province, took to the streets on July 29 in 104F heat to protest a local government-led plan to erect broadcast towers in a heavily populated area of the city.

The project would see a series of medium frequency broadcasting towers, mainly to be used for television, built on a small hill in Furong District, which is the center of Changsha. The towers would have been less than 650 feet away from the closest houses. The authorities responded by dispatching anti-riot police who put down the protests.

Protesters had organized an online and street-based campaign to try to block the project. They wore T-shirts with slogans ?Build the Tower, Kill the People,? and held banners saying ?No right to life! Tens of thousands of people look forward to abolishing the project!?

In the online campaign the messaging attempted to hew closely to the specific concerns of the broadcasting towers, rather than making broader political demands and so allowing the authorities an excuse to retaliate. ?We don?t want democracy! We just want survival,? one of the slogans said in the publicity materials prepared by the protesters.

The facticity of the chief contention of the protesters?that the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the transmission towers will be strongly deleterious to their health?is difficult to definitively establish. Research on the matter has been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals suggesting that proximity to transmission towers can have health impacts. The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency, however, says there is no scientific consensus that such transmissions are a health risk.

Whatever the niceties of scientific evidence, local authorities were not in the mood to negotiate with protesters. Instead, they sent armed riot police. ?We didn?t get a response from the leaders, but instead suffered the might of special police and their vicious wolfdogs,? one part of an image they prepared, circulated online, said.?

?The city government dispatched several hundred armed police and special police, and police dogs as well,? said a Changsha resident, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation. ?Physical confrontation occurred. An elderly resident was beaten and had a rib broken. Another elder suffered a bleeding ear after being beaten. Blood was all over him. He?s still in the hospital.?

The resident said that they were ?sitting quietly and putting up banners? when the police arrived. He said that they contacted local media but no journalists were sent to cover the event.

Information about the protest emerged on China?s largest social network, Sina Weibo, but there were no official reports.

Protests like that in Changsha occur regularly in China, and are often suppressed violently by the authorities. A demonstration was held in May of this year in Kunming of the southern Yunnan Province, against a plan to build a new chemical plant. Thousands of residents turned out, and were also met with police, with beatings reported.

Brentwood's new school union prepares to bargain for first time

BRENTWOOD -- Class sizes, salaries, the number of days teachers work each year -- there's nothing out of the ordinary about the talking points that Brentwood Union School District administrators soon will be addressing at the bargaining table.

And yet the discussions will be anything but business as usual: For the first time since California's public school employees gained the right to negotiate with their bosses in 1975, the district will be hammering out a contract with a teachers' union.

The state recognized Brentwood Teachers Association as the exclusive representative of the district's 403 certificated employees on June 4 after teachers voted to unionize.

Although a simple majority of the 316 who cast ballots would have decided the matter, those favoring a union won by a two-thirds margin.

Until now, a group of 20 instructors known as the Teacher Liaison Committee would present district decision-makers with their wish list but held no sway over them: The district wasn't obligated to negotiate anything or even to meet with them, said Bruce Colwell of the California Teachers Association.

He advises bargaining teams in far East County's four other school districts and now will serve Brentwood Union's as well.

The district also had the power to change the teachers' employee handbook unilaterally, Colwell said.

The scope of the topics discussed was limited because TLC's members only had so much time to research them, he added.

Now, "everything's on the table," said middle school history teacher and union President Darrin Spencer, one of five educators who spearheaded the campaign to organize.

According to a 2010 story in this newspaper, Brentwood Union was the sole school district in Contra Costa County without a teachers union. Clovis Unified in Fresno County was the only other district widely known in education circles to be nonunion.

Ironically, the vote this spring marked the second time that the district's teachers have formed a union.

In May 1976, teachers filed a request with the state Public Employment Relations Board to have the district recognize Brentwood Teachers Association as their sole representative.

Instead of asserting their rights, however, they reverted to the practice of allowing the state's Education Code and board policy alone to determine their working conditions.

As the years passed, teachers eventually forgot about their new powers, so it came as a surprise when Spencer and some of his colleagues discovered in 2001 that a union existed.

This time, however, a majority of teachers preferred the status quo and voted to decertify the union in February 2002.

Spencer says he only can speculate why certificated employees now have chosen the California Teachers Association to represent them once again; one reason might be the temporary freeze the district placed in 2011-12 on the years of experience that teachers were accruing, a factor used to calculate their pay raises, he said.

Margaret Kruse, assistant superintendent of human resources, doesn't think there was any conflict that precipitated the push for a union, however.

Rather, she attributes the campaign's success in part to proponents' perseverance in informing their colleagues about the benefits of unionization.

"They have presented it enough times where they reached a majority of people who said yes," she said.

Kruse also noted that Brentwood Union has a growing number of teachers who belonged to unions in other districts and want the same level of representation here.

In addition, layoffs and pay cuts in recent years have left employees feeling uncertain about the future and wanting job protection, Kruse said.

Whatever the reasons that brought them to this point, Spencer and his colleagues will have more leverage when they come to the bargaining table and additional rights when they leave.

Teachers historically haven't had access to the sophisticated tools CTA uses to analyze school budgets, Colwell said.

As a result, they've been at a disadvantage when the district has announced its spending plans for the next year's revenue.

"They just didn't have the power to counter what the district was telling them," Colwell said.

PPI insurance complaints may have peaked - ombudsman

By Matt Scuffham

LONDON (Reuters) - The Financial Ombudsman Service is starting to see a decline in the number of complaints it receives about mis-sold loan insurance but levels remain very high, Chief Financial Ombudsman Natalie Ceeney said.

Britain's biggest banks are expected to this week set aside hundreds of millions of pounds more to compensate customers mis-sold the insurance but Ceeney's comments will raise their hopes that the worst is behind them.

The industry has already set aside more than 14 billion pounds to compensate customers mis-sold payment protection policies (PPI), which were meant to protect borrowers in the event of sickness or unemployment but were often sold to those who would have been ineligible to claim.

Ceeney said the ombudsman, which steps in where customers and their banks can't reach an agreement, is now receiving 2,000 new cases every working day compared with 3,000 at its peak six months ago.

"I think somewhat inevitably the people who care most about complaining and trying to get compensation do so first. In any complaints cycle the numbers rise and you subsequently see them fall. I suspect we're on the downward curve," Ceeney told Reuters in an interview on Monday.

Ceeney cautioned it was difficult to predict future trends.

"Will it fall to 1,000 in six months? I just don't know. The interesting thing about PPI is none of us know where it's going to go," she said.

Despite the ombudsman working with banks to improve their complaints handling procedures, Ceeney said 78 percent of cases were being resolved in the customer's favour.

"We should be seeing uphold rates at 20 to 25 percent because banks should know what they're doing now. These are now so well trodden. When customers do complain it should be handled properly," she said.

Barclays is expected to add to the 2.6 billion pounds it has set aside for PPI costs, when it becomes the first UK bank to report results on Tuesday. Lloyds, which has set aside 6.8 billon pounds already, the most of any bank, is also expected to increase its provision on Thursday.

Lloyds ended a contract with Deloitte in June after problems were uncovered in the way a call centre operated by the business services firm handled customer complaints about PPI.

"Too many of the banks have not taken enough care on PPI complaint handling. Most of the big banks have outsourced it. The problem if you outsource is that you have to pay huge amounts of care to make sure your outsourcers are working to the right standards," Ceeney said.

According to figures from Britain's financial regulator, 50 million PPI policies were sold and only around 15 percent of people who had the policies have claimed for compensation.

Ceeney also said the ombudsman had seen a sharp rise in complaints about payday lenders although the numbers remained relatively low, which she blamed in part on the stigma felt by those who had used payday lenders.

Both web-based and print-based decision aids appear to improve patients' informed decision making about prostate cancer screening up to 13 months later, but does not appear to affect actual screening rates, according to a study by Kathryn L. Taylor, Ph.D., of Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., and colleagues.

A total of 1,893 men participated in the study, with 628 men randomly given a print-decision aid, 625 men used a web-based interactive decision aid, and 626 men received usual care. Researchers measured the participants' prostate cancer knowledge, decisional conflict, decisional satisfaction and whether participants underwent prostate cancer screening.

According to the study results, at each follow-up both decision aids resulted in significantly improved prostate cancer knowledge and reduced decisional conflict compared with usual care. At one month, high satisfaction was reported by significantly more print (60.4 percent) than web participants (52.2 percent) and significantly more web and print than usual care participants. At 13 months, differences in the proportion of men reporting high satisfaction among print (55.7 percent) compared with usual care (49.8 percent) and web participants (50.4 percent) was not significant. Screening rates at 13 months did not differ significantly among groups.

"The DAs [decision aids] offer neutrality, shown by the fact that they did not influence the screening decision in either direction compared with UC [usual care] these tools offer flexibility for patients and providers, given the availability of both print-based and we-based tools," the study concludes.

Joe Belfiore: Windows Phone 8 GDR2 fixes storage bug; pushing Yahoo for better Flickr app

Microsoft's head of Windows Phone development, Joe Belfiore, posted a number of messages on his Twitter account today. While his main purpose was to show off more images he took with the newly launched Nokia Lumia 1020 smartphone, he also took the time to answer some questions from Windows Phone 8 owners as well.

One post addressed the "other storage" bug that has plagued Windows Phone 8 users for a long time now. It basically puts a section of a device's on-board storage under the "other" tag, but it also takes up quite a bit of space, especially among lower end smartphones that don't have a lot of storage to spare.

In a Twitter post, Belfiore claims that the Windows Phone 8 GDR2 update, which is slowly making its way to current devices, fixes this issue:

That's the official statement, but there are other reports online that claim the bug is still there and that the GDR2 update may have just improved the situation, rather than done away with the bug completely.

On another subject, Belfiore posted up his new Nokia Lumia 1020 images on his Flickr account and he stated today that he is a fan of Yahoo's photo sharing service. However, he also admits that the current official Flickr app for Windows Phone is lacking. In another Twitter post today he stated:

The official Flickr Windows Phone app has not been updated since late March. Since then, Yahoo has launched a revamp of the Flickr service, which increased the amount of its free photo storage to 1 TB.

Officials: Train driver suspected of negligent homicide

SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, Spain (AP) ? Spain's interior minister announced Saturday that the driver whose speeding train crashed, killing 78 people, is now being held on suspicion of negligent homicide.

Minister of Interior Jorge Fernandez Diaz announced the step against Francisco Jose Garzon Amo, who previously had been detained on suspicion of recklessness following Wednesday's crash in Santiago de Compostela.

"There is rational evidence to lead us to think that the driver could have eventual responsibility," the minister told reporters at the city's police station.

Fernandez Diaz also said Garzon, 52, has been discharged from the hospital, taken to the police station and would appear before a judge by Sunday evening.

Garzon has the right to keep silent, "although he may change his mind on that," the minister said.

Blame has increasingly fallen on the driver, with the country's railway agency saying it was his responsibility to brake before going into the high-risk curve where the train tumbled off the rails and smashed into a wall. But it's still not clear whether the brakes failed or were never used, and the driver has remained silent so far.

A blood-soaked Garzon was photographed Wednesday being escorted away from the wreckage, at first by civilians who had hurried to the scene of the accident and then by police, but it is not clear just what his medical status is.

Unconfirmed media reports said that Garzon had injured ribs.

He had been expected to give a preliminary statement to judicial police as early as Thursday, but that process was delayed, reportedly due to health reasons. Earlier Saturday, the justice department said Garzon's first appearance before a judge had been postponed until Sunday.

In Wednesday's crash, the train's eight carriages packed with 218 passengers blazed far over the speed limit into a curve and violently tipped over. Diesel fuel sent flames coursing through some cabins.

Investigators are examining recording devices from the train but have not officially said how fast it was going when it derailed.

An American passenger, Stephen Ward, said he was watching the train's speed on a display screen in the carriage ? and it indicated it was going 194 kph (121 mph), more than double the 80-kph speed limit.

The president of Adif, the Spanish rail agency, said that the driver should have started slowing the train 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) before the dangerous bend. He said signs clearly marked this point when the driver must begin to slow.

Normally, police take a first statement that is then examined by an investigating judge who must then take testimony within 72 hours of the arrest. That deadline is Sunday.

Although that initial court hearing would be closed, it would give hints about the status of the investigation. The judge would decide whether to jail the driver as an official suspect, release him on bail, or release him without charges. If a judge finds sufficient evidence for a criminal trial, the suspect will be charged and a trial date set.

Search Engine Marketing? The Full Package deal | OptimizareSite.org

Search Engine Marketing-- The Full Package deal
Search Engine Marketing? The Full Package deal

After carrying out extensive research I have actually concerned the verdict that there is a great deal of misunderstanding surrounding the subject of Search Engine Advertising. The greatest misconception joins perplexing the terms Online search engine Marketing (SEM) and Online search engine Optimisation (SEO).

One would certainly believe that those individuals claiming to be SEO experts must be well-informed regarding the subject and identify the clear distinction. Evidently this is not the instance; the web teems with misguided details, from so called specialists. Proving, I suppose that the business is satisfactorily sprayed with cowboys.

To start, let us first define the term ?Online search engine Optimization? (henceforth described as SEO).

Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization is the process of maneuvering the structure and content of a site as though it will certainly perform even better in the search engine?s natural listings. The techniques entailed can be sub-structured in to many areas of task, as comprehensive below.

1) Web page preparedness? Search engines expect to crawl tidy HTML code. Every page of an internet site must be confirmed to do away with errors and sloppy html coding.

2) Website preparedness? Online search engine internet bots comply with the links on your web pages and consequently find new web pages to index. If a web bot meets a broken link it could not continue spidering your site. Ensure you have no busted links. Additionally, give a site chart. A tool for creating site charts is available at my site, www.pro-seo.co.uk.

3) Key words option? It is essential to select the right key phrases for which a specific web page is to be optimized. The most noticeable key words are not always the best selection, and are frequently mega-competitive. Decide on wisely.

4) Site structure? Your web site ought to be structured as though each web page can be enhanced for a max of two key phrases. Do not try to enhance for a lot of key phrases on one page. Don?t forget, you need to write for your individuals. Composing duplicate is a balancing act that keeps both users and search engines delighted, and is better attained on a well structured website.

5) Copy writing? the visible text on your web pages ought to be structured to consist of the two essential key phrases for that web page?s material. Obtain the key words into headers. Operate the key words in to paragraph text, having your key words show up near the beginning, near the middle, and near the end. Make some keywords bold, some italic and some underscored.

6) HTML tags? The most vital of these is the Title tag. Obtain both key words for that page into the Title tag, without repeating. For instance, if your main key expression is ?dieting plan plans?, and your 2nd expression is ?diet supplements?, the Title tag ought to read ?diet regimen plans and supplements?. Do not repeat the word diet, to search engines it may appear like spamming. If your primary problem is to enhance your Google rank, you may have overlooked the Meta key words and Meta summary tags, do not, there are a lot more search engines than Google and they can all bring traffic. Also, get the key phrases into H1 tags, H2 tags, alt features, and critical, your web link content.

And after doing everything for each page in your web site you may be asking: so where does SEM come in?

SEM

SEM includes SEO plus all the other points you can do to improve your exposure in the search engines and boost targeted visitors to your web site. A condensed checklist could be as complies with:.

1) SEO (see above).
2) A hyperlink building technique.
3) Pay per click (PPC) projects.
4) Banner exchanges.
5) Press releases.
6) And any other activity that will acquire your website observed.

SEM then, is the complete package. Whereas SEO techniques are a vital, but not the only, part of that package deal.

Herbal Meds, Cosmetic Surgery a Bad Mix: Experts - Health News ...

FRIDAY, July 26 (HealthDay News) ? About half of patients take herbal and other supplements before undergoing cosmetic facial plastic surgery, according to a new study.

Many of these supplements can put patients at risk during surgery and they should stop taking them at least two weeks before their procedure, Dr. Bahman Guyuron and colleagues at Case Western Reserve University advised.

The investigators examined the medication lists of 200 patients scheduled for cosmetic facial plastic surgery ? such as a facelift or nose job ? and found that 49 percent of the patients were taking at least one type of supplement.

Overall, the patients were taking 53 different types of supplements. The average number of supplements was nearly three per patient, but one patient was taking 28 different supplements, according to the study in the July issue of the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Older patients and women were most likely to be taking supplements, according to a journal news release.

One-quarter of the patients were taking vitamin and mineral supplements only, most commonly multivitamins, vitamin D, calcium and vitamin B. Twenty-two percent were taking animal- and plant-based supplements ? most often fish oil ? in addition to vitamins and minerals. Just 2.5 percent of patients were taking animal- and plant-based supplements only.

Thirty-five patients were taking supplements linked with an increased risk of bleeding, such as bilberry, bromelain, fish oil, flaxseed oil, garlic, methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), selenium and vitamin E.

In addition to the supplements linked to bleeding risk, other popular supplements with potential harmful effects include echinacea, ephedra (ma huang), ginkgo, ginseng, kava, St. John?s wort, valerian, feverfew and ginger.

The patients in the study were told to stop taking supplements two to three weeks before surgery.

?These high-risk supplements . . . are quite commonly used and the surgeon must elicit a complete history in order to avoid the known adverse consequences of supplement use on surgical outcome,? the researchers wrote.

Brooks to Obama: Tie social issues with economic push | The Daily ...

On Friday?s airing of PBS?s ?NewsHour,? New York Times columnist David Brooks offered support for President Barack Obama?s ?worthy? new economic PR blitz, but?suggested?government needs to take a greater interest in Americans? personal lives as well as their wallets.

In his weekly appearance with Creators Syndicate columnist Mark Shields, Brooks commented that the president has taken his argument away from a ?cyclical debate? about the economy to put focus on that it is a structural debate.

?I agree that what?s nice is they?re moving from the cyclical debate we have been having over for the past five or six years, which is stimulus versus austerity, to a structural debate,? Brooks said. ?And he?s talking about the big issues, globalization, technological change, widening inequality, all that kind of stuff. And I?m glad we?re having that debate. I agree with Mark [Shields]. The prescriptions are ? they?re not bad. They?re just normal. And so they?re infrastructure spending, raising the minimum wage, improving education. That?s all worthy. They?re incommensurate with the size of the problems. We have had decades where men are just dropping out of the labor force, widening inequality. These are gigantic problems. And where I wish he would go and what would be creative and I think take an interesting turn in the debate is to combine the economics and the social.?

However, with that newfound focus on structural issues, Brooks suggested Obama should consider social aspects in society that inhibit the economy.

?So say you?re a young woman, you?re working in a factory, you?re making $9 an hour, you want the job that will get you to $14 or $20 an hour,? he continued. ?It turns out you actually need to go back to school and get some technical skills. But say you?re a single mom with a kid. You can?t do that. And so this is the way the social and the economic interact in real lives. And if you?re that kid, your chances of dropping out of the labor force without a dad in the home are much higher. So having a debate where we talk about some of the social problems, the decline in marriage, some of the economic problems and how they interact, that seems to me where the debate is among economists and the academy. It would be great to see Obama merge those two.?

Later, Brooks said there seemed to a lack of focus with Obama and compared it to the so-called Progressive Era, which had a distinct message.? And part of that distinct message, he said, should involve the social aspects of labor force.

?If you go back to ? there are moments of big economic transitions,? Brooks said. ?So the progressive era in the 19th century, beginning in the 20th was a similar moment of transition. And you had this concentration of power in certain trusts and corporations. It took the progressive movement really to come up with an intellectual solution to that, which turned into progressivism, a whole chain of legislation. We?re at similar moment with these big shifts in technology and globalization. I wouldn?t say there?s been a movement like the progressive movement which even has a solution, which has an adequate description.?

?And so it?s tough to ask a president and his staff to come up with that which economists and academics have not done,? Brooks said. ?And part of the problem, as I tried to indicate earlier, it?s not simply an economic problem. It?s a social problem. It has to do with social structures and family structures. So, until those answers come up from the world of ideas, it?s really hard for a president to come up with them on his own. He?s too busy.?

Enter the Dragon: Exclusive Interview With Fred Weintraub, Producer of the Bruce Lee Blockbuster

If the revered academy started giving out a Lifetime Achievement Award for Fight Films, Fred Weintraub would be the hands-down winner the first year. His filmography as a producer in the genre is unrivaled: Black Belt Jones (1974), Golden Needles (1974), The Ultimate Warrior (1978), Jaguar Lives! (1979), The Big Brawl (1980), Force: Five (1981), Gymkata (1985), The Best of the Martial Arts Films (1990), China O?Brien (1990), China O?Brien 2 (1991), The Curse of the Dragon (1993), Warrior Angels (2002) and Dream Warrior (2003), among others.

For most martial artists, however, his crowning achievement is 1973?s Enter the Dragon. Fred Weintraub recently finished dusting off his fondest memories of the film, along with his interactions with its legendary star, and committed them to paper in the form of a book titled Bruce Lee, Woodstock and Me. Black Belt conducted this interview shortly before it came out.

Is this book your autobiography?

That?s right, but it?s not like I began it by writing about the day I was born. It?s about the 40 films I did, plus a little of my background.

How long did it take you to write it?

About 10 years ago is when I started thinking about it and writing things down. For the last two years, I really hunkered down.

Do you spend much time talking about the other martial arts movies you?ve done, or is it mostly Enter the Dragon?

There?s a little bit about Jackie Chan, who I really like. There?s more about Bruce Lee, of course. It?s divided up into a section on Bruce Lee mythology, one on how Enter the Dragon came to be, and one on the TV series Kung Fu ? things nobody knows about.

What?s your connection to Kung Fu?

I had just become an executive at Warner Bros. in their New York office. I was pitched by two young men ? Ed Spielman and Howard Friedlander ? a project called Kung Fu. I commissioned them $3,500 to write the script for Warner Bros. They wrote the script, and later I moved to Burbank, California. I presented the script to the studio, but Warner Bros. wouldn?t make it into a movie. I walked over to the television division and gave it to a man who later became one of my partners. He liked the idea and gave the order to get started.

At that time, I had a friend named Sy Weintraub. While I was in LA, he was taking private lessons from Bruce ? along with Steve McQueen and James Coburn. One day, Sy said, ?You ought to meet this Bruce Lee,? and he introduced us.

I found him to be charming, bright and very intellectual. We became good friends. When they were casting Kung Fu, I said, ?I have the perfect guy? ? or at least I thought he was ? and I took Bruce to see Tom Kuhn. Bruce used the nunchaku and just amazed Tom.

Tom called me over and said, ?Who is this guy?? I said, ?He?s going to be a great action star.? He said, ?Let me see what the network thinks.?

Of course, the network turned him down. They felt the time wasn?t right for an international star. Bruce did not get the part.

What was Bruce Lee?s reaction?

Bruce went to Hong Kong. Meanwhile, I [explained a concept for a new movie] to Ted Ashley at Warner Bros. ? he was taking lessons in that group and really liked Bruce ? and he flipped. So I had a script written and brought it over to the foreign guys at Warner Bros., and they said they could give us a little bit of money ? it wasn?t a lot, but it helped.

With the script in hand, I went to Hong Kong to have Bruce read it and talk to Raymond Chow about getting some money. Raymond was wonderful, cordial, terrific ? he showed me around Hong Kong for the few weeks I was there, and we negotiated constantly about distribution rights. Toward the end, Raymond was upset. He thought of Bruce as his kid and wanted to keep him in Hong Kong. I can?t blame the guy, but Bruce wanted a bigger market. He wanted to be a star; he had it in him.

The last night I was there, it looked like the deal was falling through. We went to a Japanese restaurant ? at that time, you couldn?t walk the street with Bruce without having 500 people follow you ? and sat down. I took my last shot, then looked at Bruce and said, ?I?m sorry but you?re not going to be an international star, but I know you?re going to be a great star here.?

Bruce said, ?What do you mean??

I looked at Raymond and said: ?We can?t make a deal. Raymond wants too much territory, and I?ve given him three more [territories] than what Warner Bros. has OK?d. You?ll be great here.?

Bruce looked at Raymond and said, ?Make the deal.? That night, I made the deal, and Raymond didn?t like it. He ended up putting in a certain amount of money ? I think he paid Bruce a hundred grand, also.

So without that final command from Bruce Lee, there wouldn?t have been an Enter the Dragon.

That?s right. By the way, it was called Blood and Steel at that time. It was only later when Bruce started seeing it get put together that he said he wanted it to be called Enter the Dragon. I said, ?Bruce, that?s a title for a kids? movie.? So he called Ted Ashley, and Ted said to give it to him if he wanted it. In this case, Bruce was completely right and I was completely wrong.

Before Bruce Lee and Enter the Dragon came along, every small town in America had a beauty parlor and a church. After Bruce, every small town also had a karate school. What karate school doesn?t have a photo of Bruce on the wall?

I?ve noticed that it?s the same in other countries, too.

Until about five years ago, in countries like India, Enter the Dragon was still one of the most popular pictures. Considering what it cost to make, it?s one of the most profitable pictures of all time. It made so much money the studio even had to pay me. (laughs)

Do you consider Enter the Dragon your best work?

Every film is your best work. Every film you make you think is good when you read the script. You never know how they?re going to turn out, though, because it?s such a collaborative art.

Do you still get questions and requests for interviews about Bruce Lee and Enter the Dragon?

All the time ? but I don?t always answer them. Shannon Lee is there to keep the legend alive. She does a good job. But I think he?d be kept alive anyway.

Has America Forgotten the War? An Alum on His Military Experiences

Posted by news on Thursday, July 25, 2013 ? Leave a Comment?

A couple of days before a friend of mine deployed to Afghanistan, I went to dinner with his family. I was stunned when, after talking to his mom for only a few minutes, she told me that upon hearing her son was about to deploy, people would ask if America was still sending troops to war. I couldn?t believe that a war, which had pervaded every aspect of my life, was so insignificant to others who are so removed from an army burdened by constant deployments. It worries me that my friend?s profound sacrifice may go unnoticed by those who don?t have a close friend or family member who serves.

Like many young officers who commissioned in my year group, I joined the army to serve my country during wartime. I made this decision during my time at Emory and began officer training shortly after graduation. My choice felt deliberate and meaningful. I could think of nothing more rewarding than wearing a sacred uniform and leading young Americans who felt the same urge to serve their country while she prosecuted two wars overseas. Through all my training, the prospect of serving in Afghanistan loomed large. Every bloc of instruction my peers and I received whether technical, tactical, or moral was learned and practiced with the war in Afghanistan lingering in the backdrop. It is not an exaggeration to say that I have thought about the war every day since I?ve entered active service. My assignment to the First Cavalry Division, one of the most deployed units in the army, only intensified my contact with the results and daily realities of America?s longest war.

The day my friend was scheduled to fly out of the country I dropped him off at his company. As we unloaded his bags from my car we were surrounded by hundreds of deploying soldiers in the midst of tearful goodbyes to their loved ones. They are the ones who boldly answered their country?s call to serve during wartime. They are the ones who hug their loved ones one last time without knowing if their world will be the same when they return. The ones who risk life and limb to serve in a region of the world where daily mortar attacks, IEDs and small arms fire are the norm. Many of these combat soldiers know they will return with memories that scar and color the rest of their lives and yet the majority still volunteer and serve honorably. It is a privilege to serve with men and women like my friend and from the bottom of my heart, I thank them for their service. It is my hope that we all recognize how lucky we are to have them and that these soldiers? tremendous sacrifice doesn?t wane in our society?s memory.? As our last combat brigades deploy and return home from Afghanistan, we must not forget what they have given up to make sure America?s withdrawal from Afghanistan is both safe and successful.

Neel Vahil is a graduate of Emory University and is currently serving as a combat arms lieutenant in the First Cavalry Division in Ft. Hood, Texas.

Google introduces Chromecast, a $35 HDMI streaming solution for televisions (video)

Google introduces Chromekey, an HDMI streaming device for televisions

Google's Chromecast is Mountain View's next foray into the television market. In brief, it's a $35 HDMI dongle that mirrors content being played nearby on a tablet, smartphone or computer. Hrm, that sounds familiar. The 2-inch device runs "a simplified version of Chrome OS" and requires separate USB power; connect it to your local WiFi network and similarly connected devices work with Chromecast. It can be ordered right now on Google Play and will apparently ship in one to two days. Of note, the device seems US-only for now, as our UK colleagues are showing a "not available in your country" prompt. Early buyers get three months of free Netflix with the purchase. Additionally, it's also heading to retail (read: Best Buy) on July 28th. Google ended its presentation with a quick word that Chromecast functionality will eventually come embedded in various other devices, and that it's working on getting other countries access "as quickly as possible." No specs were given during the presentation, but its Google Play page lists the device as HDMI-CEC compatible, and it uses 2.4GHz 801.11 b/g/n WiFi. Given the separate USB power required, the $35 nets you a Chromecast device, an HDMI extended, a USB power cable and a separate power adapter.

Apps that work with the device include a "Cast" button that allows users to push video to their televisions and control various aspects remotely (volume, play, pause, etc.). "Once Chromecast is plugged in, you just go to YouTube on your smartphone," Google reps said. "You'll see the cast button in your UI and you press it -- Chromecast will pull the info you requested from the cloud and play it on your TV." Meanwhile, an on-stage demonstration showed YouTube video being pushed "via the cloud," thus enabling other apps to be used while a video is being viewed on a television screen. Netflix was up next, and it has similar remote control functionality. Google Play movies and television (expectedly) also work with Chromecast, and Google delightedly demonstrated it with Vin Diesel vehicle Fast Five. Finally, Google demoed full Google Chrome projected on a TV and controlled remotely with a "standard $500 Windows 8 laptop." The feature is "still in early days," but a promise has already been made: that users will be able to easily project content to televisions via their web browser.

Update: We've added Chromecast's first commercial (which demonstrates much of the device's functionality) just after the break, and a source link with Google's formal announcement.
