Puerto Penasco ? June 2011 | Arizona Getaway Travel

What was once an extremely popular vacation destination, Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico ? more commonly known as Rocky Point ? has seen a sudden drop in visitors because of the recession and the fear of violence. Travel writers, bloggers, Arizona journalists for years have been using the beach town as subject matter and in the past 15 years, the city on the Sea of Cortez in northwestern Sonora, had been gaining enormous growth. But in the past two or three years, since the Mexican government began heavy drug cartel crackdowns, the border towns have been hurting, after witnessing higher levels of violence, primarily along the Texas border. With the exception of rather isolated violence in the border entry of Nogales, Sonora, most of the Arizona border towns are relatively quiet. Puerto Penasco, like other municipalities within close proximity of the border, has also seen sharp decline. But things may be changing. Rocky Point is just beginning to see an increase in tourist activity as more and more Arizonans are beginning to feel more secure about traveling to Mexico. On our trip this month, we spoke to business owners, resort workers and restaurant staff that have said they felt tourism starting to improve.

Morning walks along the beach can be a time of renewal and relaxation

With Rocky Point?s development of the area just north of town, known as Sandy Beach in the past 10-15 years, tourists are reminiscent of beach-lined resorts in other parts of Mexico, like Cancun or Puerto Vallarta. Building after building of high-rise condominiums line up along the water, from the edge of the commercial fishing marina to the northwestern land?s end, known as Pelican Point. The Reef, with its bar and camping/RV park, is still there, a well-known reminder of spring breaks past and a time when Sandy Beach was more for campsites than condos. While the units of these condo resorts are almost all privately, individually owned, many are investment properties rented like hotel suites. They provide golf discounts, fine dining and nightlife opportunities ? even spa, fitness and business center amenities.

So if you?re in Arizona, no doubt you?ve been watching the heavy boost of Mexico tourism-sponsored TV and print advertising, and perhaps now you?re thinking about returning to Rocky Point. Before venturing back to Puerto Penasco, here?s a few travel tips:

1. Travel during the day. It?s a good idea whether you?re crossing the Arizona desert or the Sonora desert. As a group of three couples, the six of us? ? all from the eastern Phoenix-area suburbs usually depart in the early morning hours, driving from Chandler to Maricopa, then take State Route SR 2387 to drive to Gila Bend, where we usually make a breakfast stop. From Gila Bend, it?s a straight shot on State Route 85 through Ajo (watch your speed on this stretch) and then on to Lukeville.

2. Be prepared when crossing the international border; there?s a few changes. When crossing the border, the Mexican authorities will now stop motorists and ask if they are transporting firearms. I have heard they have also questioned drivers about vehicle registration, passports or auto insurance. In addition, your vehicle may be randomly selected for a thorough search, so it?s important to know what you can and cannot bring. One website which has comprehensive travel information is the RPTimes site, but there are many numerous Rocky Point travel websites now, so it?s a good idea to check several to see which ones are up-to-date.

3.? You might want to bring some loose change for charity donations. Periodically as you drive through Sonoita, just south of the border from Lukeville, and the north end of Puerto Penasco, you will encounter children and adults standing in the middle of the street, holding a can asking for donations for various charities. Popular ones could be Red Cross, the local fire department, a senior living home, an orphanage, etc. If you feel you want to donate, please do, and that?s why we always travel to Rocky Point with some loose change or pesos leftover from a previous trip. After you pass through Sonoita, it should be smooth sailing until you get to Rocky Point.

Sailing is just one of many boating opportunities

4. Buy your food and drinks for your vacation in Puerto Penasco. Except for your favorite wines, craft brews, apples and chocolate, you will find most everything else you will need for your vacation in Rocky Point stores and markets.? Shrimp is best when purchased during the season, which is usually April-May or October. Find the wide assortment at the markets on the malecon. But many other seafood varieties are available throughout the year.? In addition to the souvenir vendors at Rodeo Drive, there are many nice newer stores, selling high quality silver, pottery, T-shirts, cotton dresses, leather products, metal sculptures, glassware ? much more.? The blankets I bought in 1978 for $6 each, are still used today and in fantastic shape. Additional groceries stores are opening up in many neighborhoods. We particularly like the one called Super Ley, a kind of mini warehouse-type grocery and variety store.

5. Some of the best deals are found at places you?d likely least expect, such as these ?Puerto Penasco? mugs I found at one of the local pharmacies. Many of these drug stores, have much more than prescriptions ? they also carry sundries, beach toys, cosmetics and a few even stock sodas and frozen fruit treats.

Puerto Penasco insulated souvenir mugs are perfect for those cold, tasty beverages down at the pool

6. One of the first things we do when we arrive to Puerto Penasco is pick up several of the English newspapers, featuring listings of many of the activities and events and current real estate classifieds, which often include news of new residential developments, businesses and tourism services. Three of the free newspapers we have found reliable are the Rocky Point Times, Join Us Here in Rocky Point, Rocky Point Weekly, plus there are probably more.? Check your resort?s front desk, restaurant or in front of the nearby pharmacy for a display rack.

7. Develop a vacation tradition. As soon as we arrive in Rocky Point, the smells of the sand and sea, roasting chiles and simmering frijoles get our mouths watering for our favorite meals. One of our first stops we make after arriving in Rocky Point is for lunch, at Flavio?s (Aqui es con Flavio). This waterfront restaurant at the malecon (waterfront esplanade) is a favorite among locals and visitors alike for the fresh seafood dishes, well-equipped margaritas and real pina coladas. Each person in our group has their special favorite, whether it?s fish or shrimp tacos, an meal-sized shrimp cocktail, a whole fish dinner or a combo plate. Flavio?s is just one of several excellent restaurants along the Malecon. We like it not just because of the food, but also the excellent friendly service provided by the parking attendants, wait staff, bartenders ? even the strolling musicians. Other visitors find their vacation tradition watching the sun set over the water at one of the hilltop restaurants with the best views like Casa del Capitan. Some find their tradition with a visit to JJ?s Cantina in Cholla Bay. Start a tradition for your family reunion group or circle of friends.

A visit to the Cet-Mar Aquarium near Las Conchas should be on every family's Rocky Point "Things to Do"

8. Find your own getaway niche at Rocky Point. This destination can be equally accommodating to any leisure pursuit, whether it?s a fiesta or a siesta. The resorts may be bustling at times, like late in the afternoons when everyone?s checking in to their suites and excited to be headed to the cafes or cantinas, or they can be calm and relaxing, such as the early morning, when only a few guests get up early to take a stroll along the beach, or simply sit in the common areas to enjoy the shaded pool areas or finely manicured gardens.

views

Views of the Sandy Beach resorts

9. Beach it! I always have to chuckle when people come to the beach but then don?t go near the beach. Well, I guess some folks just want to ?view? the beach. Too sandy? Too wet? I don?t know, maybe it?s just me. But I know I want to be on the beach, especially Sandy Beach! The sand is really fine and smooth and except for a few deposits of coral which you can easily locate when the tide is out, most all the sea floor is perfect for wading, swimming, splashing, whatever. Indeed, there are times of year when jellyfish are more prevalent; those are usually when there seasonal weather changes, or windy conditions exist, such as during late summer monsoon time or occasional spring storms. I keep a spray bottle of white vinegar just in case of jellyfish sting. Then there are stingrays, so it?s best to do the shuffling of feet through the shallows. it?s good to know there is now an outpatient medical clinic on Sandy Beach.

10. Come ready to play on the beach! Bring the cooler full of lots of water, snacks, etc. Those backpack coolers work great, even better than the ones with the wheels, I think. For the kids, bring kites, sand castle construction equipment, frisbees, and plenty of other water toys. Of course, you?ll need the obvious sunscreen; plus maybe some wet wipes, which will come in handy after the kids eat those fresh dripping mangos on a stick. Many resorts have their own palapas ? those grass covered canopies ? but you may want to bring your own beach umbrella or other portable canopy with plenty of sand anchors. Nothing destroys a brand new beach umbrella more than the wind blowing southwest from the Sea of Cortez in late spring or early summer. We like our screw-in beach umbrella anchor.

banana boat

The banana boat rides are a favorite form of excitement in the waves

11. Sandy Beach can often be the best place to shop. Why take away from valuable beach time when the jewelry, silver, pottery, hats, sunglasses, sundresses, etc can come right to you under the shade of your umbrella? Relaxing on the beach is the best time to shop for all those souvenirs you really don?t need. Why? Because the vendors are coming to you, of course.? These vendors have no overhead costs, and every incentive to unload some heavy merchandise they?ve been toting around. Many of the items probably can be found almost anywhere in town or at the Rodeo Drive shopping district, but occasionally you will find something new or unique on the beach, and the deals on the beach are better than anywhere else. Remember these vendors can be very enthusiastic, so if beach shopping is not your thing, a simple shake of the head and a smile, or a polite, ?no, gracias? will suffice to keep the vendors moving along.

sunset

Sunset over the Sea of Cortez

Rocky Point has something for everyone. It can be a perfect place for a time of meditation and reflection, to take advantage of the tranquility of sunrise or sunset walks at water?s edge to relax. Or it can be a perfect place to recharge, energize, take part in some exciting challenge like parasailing, ultra-light flying, jetskiing or kite-surfing. Maybe there?s something in between or even a little bit of everything.

Are you a first timer to Rocky Point? Do some research. There are many websites to look at when you google Rocky Point, Mexico or Puerto Penasco. Read the reviews on tripadvisor or virtualtourist websites. Check out youtube for some videos of activities and events. Get to know Rocky Point.? If you have been meaning to return to Rocky Point, I?d highly recommend it. Get to know Rocky Point again.

When I was at the Fitness and Health Bloggers Conference last week I was exposed to lots of great blogs: Black Girls Run,? The Heart and Humor of Being Human, and Workout Nirvana, among others. The speakers were nothing less than the superstars of health and fitness blogland. One of my favorites was Ryan Sullivan, who writes a blog called No More Bacon.

Ryan spoke to us on how to find inspiration for blog topics. He was full of really useful information. One tip he had was to combine two random things. I like this idea and may give it a try one of these days. In the meantime, I (and you) can look to Ryan's fine example of this in action:

Business Advisor ? Information About Finding A C-Loan

Training Entrepreneurs ON REFINANCING C-LOANS AND Getting a Business mortgage QUOTE

Experts Warn Firmsto be Leary when Selecting C-Loan

The Richmond-Times-Dispatch said that business mortgage stocks rebounded back for the 1st time since 2007 about $52 bill yearly http://www.timesdispatch.com

With a business of this size, you can imagine the attraction for less-than-scrupulous brokers of business mortgage loans or ?c-loans?. Ac-loanis a debt secured by real property through the use of a mortgage note which evidences the existence of the loan and the impediment of that realty through the granting of a mortgage which secures the loan. InEnglish, that suggests a c-loan permits you to turn debt into property ownership. Many property owners seek a loan in the name of their business but are denied small enterprise real estate loans from their local bank.

Even the US Senate has recognized the potential bust that c-loans can have on the economy of the USA in their report Commercial Real-estate Losses and the danger to Financial Stability.http://www.gpo.gov

Business and commercial property owners use c loans to deal with the swings and roundabouts of unpredictable cash flow. Lower interest rates, lower monthly payments and longer term loans have been a recent focus of the US govt to lift the economy. As reported in the Street, small business banks are getting a lift from the US Small enterprise Administration with upwards of $3 bn. in extra c-loan funding. http://www.thestreet.com

This is good news for the commercial corporate loan industry. Commercial mortgage loansare anticipated to have continued issues. Between 2010 and 2014, about $1.4 trillion in commercial real estate loans will reach the end of theirterm. Just about half are at present ?underwater? that is, the borrower owes more than the essential property is at present worth, according to the US congressional oversight panel. Commercial property values have fallen more than 40 p.c since the beginning of 2007. Increased vacancy rates, which now go from eight percent for multifamily housing to 18 percent for office buildings, and falling rents, which have fallen 40 percent for office space and thirty three percent for retail space have exerted a strong downward pressure on the value of commercial properties.

Getting reasonable IRs and opportune reply for your c-loan may require a nationwide broker.

A Research Study that looked at business loan loans from 1996 to 2005, discovered that the expenses of IRs and lending fees on similar business loan loans ranged in variance as much as $1200 to highs of $49,000. Imagine learning that your commercial mortgage cost an additional 50 thousand dollars.

But with all the come-ons for c-loan quotes, how does one choose a commercial business or business property loan?

C-Loan Brokers

?Be prepared to interview your possible broker even before you need to make a decision,? says national mortgage broker Adam Kaplowitz of Venture Funding group. ?You?ll want to know if they have pursued and secured commercial mortgage programme like yours in the past. Giant and small c-loans are dissimilar. There are valuable tricks that must be employed in your loan submission. Otherwise, you could be hung up for so long as a year waiting for an answerwhich often starts with ?I?m sorry to say?. They may not have you and your business? best interest at heart?.

?The more your c-loan broker knows about your company elementals, the more probable they are to find
Better loans,? says Adam Kaplowitz. ?Make sure they are correspondents with several banks and c-loan sources. Lastly, get a preliminary loan quote in order to ensure the broker has a brilliant idea about your present financial situation. Many C-Loans are denied because they are presented the wrong way, are incomplete or worse shown to the incorrect lender.?

For commercial mortgage or c-loans in rural areas, Kaplowitz recommends that entrepreneurs look for govt. warranted loan programs,eg the USDA Business and Industry Loans. By phoning 1-800-578-4884, business owners can obtain a reasonable c-loan quote, frequently get consultation without cost and even receive instant ideas on qualifying for lower IRs.

Kaplowitz endorses another tool to picking a c-loan : ?Right from the start , search for a commercial mortgage broker on the internet. Look for a system that allows a genuine monetary broker to check your goals details and to determine if your c-loan is a good match for their firm. It can save weeks of frustration in shopping for a c-loan. Don?t hand your local bank tens or thousands of greenbacks because you didn?t shop for a professional c-loan broker using the proper tools. You could get hurt or seriously delayed in business property loan refinancing.?

Paul Ryan Says He's Open To Making Medicare Plan Optional

WASHINGTON -- The news from Thursday that House Budget Committee Chair Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) was willing to make his proposal for privatizing Medicare optional was not really news at all.

While his budget creates a voucher system for Medicare -- giving seniors a check to purchase insurance through an established exchange -- Ryan has, in the past, expressed openness for allowing seniors to remain in the traditional fee-for-service system. So when he told the advocacy group No American Debt that he'd be comfortable with having "a fee-for-service option alongside premium support" on Thursday, it turned some heads but it wasn't inherently earth-shattering.

Conor Sweeney, a spokesman for the congressman, pointed out that Ryan told The Weekly Standard in April that he didn't "have a problem" with allowing those under 55 to remain on traditional Medicare should they choose to do so. While he's presented his budget as financial solace for an entitlement program going bankrupt, Ryan added that allowing the choices wouldn't necessarily mitigate its "budgetary effect."

Yet when Ryan offered a similar variation of that response on Thursday, Democrats accused him of running away from the budget he authored.

"Republicans are not fooling anyone," said Nadeam Elshami, a spokesman for House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). "They voted to end Medicare and now they can?t take the heat. The only plan is called Medicare and we must strengthen it, not weaken it. What you?re hearing now is a lead balloon crashing to the ground."

It is a telling illustration of how politically advantageous Democrats believe Ryan's Medicare plan could be for them -- even as he tacks away from it, they refuse to acknowledge his flexibility. In reality, however, the aggrieved party here should be Ryan's fellow Republicans.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich took a near presidential campaign-ending amount of heat for suggesting that Ryan's proposal went too far and should be made an option. His rhetoric, of course, was part of the problem (Gingrich called it "radical" and "right-wing social engineering") but his principle is one that even Ryan himself has endorsed. And now, as one Republican operative complained to The Huffington Post, every GOP member in Congress is being forced to defend Ryan's plan even though he himself seems fine with it being a starting point -- not the end product -- of negotiations.

"Even Ryan seems to think that this was the beginning of a discussion," said the operative, who asked to remain nameless for fear of political retaliation. "It is pretty bizarre, maybe even suicidal, to take a brain storming idea and make it a litmus test."

Fathers Day in an Absent Father Society - All Global News on One Page

by Journalist, under NEWS

Being a dad is the best thing that ever happened to me. I adopted my stepdaughters (now daughters) after they were adults. Their biological dad ended contact when his marriage to my wife (now ex-wife) ended, and I filled the position of role model in their lives.
Adopting them allowed me to be a grandpa and father-in-law. All of us work in the same family business. I can?t imagine life without them.
Adopting adult children seems complicated, but it is an increasingly complex world. My odd relationship with my father may be more typical than untypical.
A line in Richard Wolffe?s book, Renegade, quoted from Obama?s Dreams of My Father hits me every Father?s Day.
Obama said, ?every man is trying to live up to his father?s expectation or make up for his father?s mistakes.?
Obama went on to say, ?I suppose that may explain my particular malady as well as anything else.?
Obama didn?t have many real interactions with his father to build from. As Wolffe noted, the book is about Obama?s own quest, self reflection and ability for storytelling.
Skills that made Obama President of the United States.
When I read the Obama quote, it made me wonder what side of the equation I fell on. Was I living up to my father?s expectations or making up for his mistakes?
In my case, it?s a little of both.
Anyone who read my second book, Son of a Son of a Gambler, recognizes that I worshiped my father. He convinced me that I can do anything I set my mind to doing.
What doesn?t come out in the book is that I actually had two fathers. A pre-Playboy bunny and a post-Playboy bunny dad.
That is where it gets complicated.
For the first nine years of my life, my father worked two jobs, seven days a week. He worked every holiday.
I saw him for the two hours that he was home for dinner and after church on Sundays. (He skipped church during football season to book bets, but otherwise was at mass every Sunday.)
He rose from extreme poverty to make some money. Bought us a big house in a nice neighborhood and then ran off to live with a Playboy bunny.
The Playboy bunny hated dad?s children, and me in particular.
During my early teen years, dad was not really part of my life. I rarely had any private interactions. He didn?t really know who I was or what I did.
When I was in high school, dad had a serious stroke. It should have killed him and he spent nearly a year in the hospital.
Through focus and hard work, he defied the original prognosis and came back to health. He also came back a changed man. He wasn?t ?born again? in the religious sense (he was still a professional gambler with hard-living friends) but everything else about him changed.
He stopped living with the Playboy bunny and married a wonderful, well-grounded woman.

Lunar eclipse turns moon blood red (AFP)

SYDNEY (AFP) ? The longest lunar eclipse in more than a decade turned the moon blood red on Thursday, giving stargazers around the world a rare visual treat.

The first eclipse of the year -- when the Earth casts its shadow over the Moon -- was seen in parts of Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia.

Often the moon turns brown but this time it became a reddish, coppery-colour, tinged by light from the Sun.

The terrestrial shadow started to fall at 1724 GMT and lifted around 2300 GMT, although "totality" -- when the lunar face is completely covered -- lasted 100 minutes -- the longest since July 2000.

While keen astronomers in parts of Australia had to contend with dense cloud cover and rain, others had a clearer view of the spectacle.

Around 130 people watched at the Sydney Observatory, with one woman dressed as a vampire.

"There was (also) a child dressed very elegantly as if she was from another century, and a little boy dressed up as a red superhuman," Sydney Observatory manager Toner Stevenson told reporters.

Professor Fred Watson, astronomer-in-charge at the Australian Astronomical Observatory, said the best view would have been from the moon itself.

"If you could watch the phenomena, you would see the earth moving across the sun and it creating a brilliant red rim around the earth," he said.

In Singapore, over 700 people gathered outside a local science centre to watch, local daily the Straits Times reported.

Some avid enthusiasts staked out spots more than four hours before the phenomenon occured with the centre organising astronomy talks and movie screenings to entertain the audience.

There were similar scenes in the Philippine capital Manila where hundreds of amateur and professional astronomers converged before dawn to catch a glimpse.

With blankets and flasks of coffee, the stargazers were treated to clear skies and pleasant weather.

"I will never get tired of watching these events," said Maximo Sacro, 67, the retired curator of the National Museum Planetarium who dusted off his 300-mm lens to capture the image.

"The moon's entry into the earth's shadow was right smack in the middle, it was just perfect. It was very rare and the duration was long."

The eclipse was widely seen across India with crowds gathered at the country's leading planetarium in the capital New Delhi.

The Nehru planetarium organised an overnight "moon carnival" to familiarise visitors, setting up special viewing telescopes.

But traditionalists were not as enthusiastic about the planetary changes, with authorities at several Indian temples reportedly shutting their doors to protect them from the supposed "evil effects" of the eclipse.

While the phenomenon could not be seen everywhere in the world, including the United States, space lovers still got a chance to see it unfold with Google teaming up with Slooh.com.

Slooh accesses telescopes around the world and Google live streamed the event, including audio narrations from astronomers.

There will be partial solar eclipses on July 1 and November 25, but the next total solar eclipse will not take place until November 13, 2012.

It will run in a track across North Australia, New Zealand, the South Pacific and southerly South America.

Afghan women 'most at risk in world'

Afghan women in Kabul's old quarter on 8 June 2011The poll says the ongoing conflict makes Afghanistan a very dangerous place for women

Afghanistan is the most dangerous country for women, an international poll of experts on gender issues says.

High levels of violence, poor healthcare and poverty make Afghanistan the worst place for women, the study by the Thomson-Reuters Foundation says.

The survey places the Democratic Republic of Congo and Pakistan in second and third positions.

India is rated the fourth most dangerous country due to high levels of female foeticide and sex trafficking.

Somalia ranked fifth in the survey.

"Ongoing conflict, Nato airstrikes and cultural practices combined make Afghanistan a very dangerous place for women," said Antonella Notari, head of Women Change Makers, a group that supports women social entrepreneurs around the world.

"In addition, women who do attempt to speak out or take on public roles that challenge ingrained gender stereotypes of what is acceptable for women to do or not, such as working as policewomen or news broadcasters, are often intimidated or killed," she added.

The poll asked 213 experts from five continents to rank countries on issues like overall perception of danger, access to healthcare, violence, cultural discrimination and human trafficking.

"This survey shows that 'hidden dangers' like a lack of education or terrible access to healthcare are as deadly, if not more so, than physical dangers like rape and murder which usually grab the headlines," Monique Villa, chief executive of Thomson-Reuters Foundation, said.

Pakistan was included in the list for having "some of the highest rates of dowry murder, so-called honour killings and early marriages".

India ranked fourth primarily due to female foeticide, infanticide and human trafficking, the report said.

A BBC correspondent in Delhi says India's inclusion among the worst five countries in the world is bound to raise eyebrows here.

The report quotes some experts as saying that "the world's largest democracy was relatively forthcoming about describing its problems, possibly casting it in a darker light than if other countries were equally transparent about trafficking".

Chris Weigant: The 2012 Republican Presidential Field

The Republican presidential field for the 2012 presidential election will be on full display this evening, as CNN airs the second nationally televised candidate debate, this one from the early-voting state of New Hampshire. Since the first debate was a little light on heavyweight candidates, this is the first chance a lot of Republican primary voters will have to assess the biggest names in the race.

All the major candidates will be participating tonight, with the exception of Jon Huntsman, Rick Perry, and Sarah Palin. Perry and Palin may not even be candidates -- neither has committed to running as of yet, even as speculation abounds over whether they'll jump in or not. Most observers expect Huntsman to announce very soon now, but he has taken a pass on tonight's debate.

But for those folks who haven't been paying much attention, we're going to run down the lists of contenders, loosely grouped in my own arbitrary categories. As always, the names within the categories are presented in alphabetical order, to avoid any showing of favoritism in placement.

White Horses

The overall weakness of the Republican field has led to a prolonged period of Republican opinion-makers wishing for a "white horse" to ride in and save the day. The last time we took a look at who was being mentioned, the names Jeb Bush, Chris Christie, Marco Rubio, and Paul Ryan were being batted around.

At this point, these four seem to be talked about less and less, as the focus of the white horse wishfulness shifts to two others. Now, Rudy Giuliani isn't exactly being begged to run by large numbers of Republican elites, due mostly to his poor showing in the 2008 primary contest. But his poll numbers are pretty impressive lately, and the rumor is that he's seriously considering another presidential run.

The second possible white horse moves up from the "dark horse" category last time around. Rick Perry is being seriously considered (and seriously sought after) at this point, especially since two of the high-profile campaign staffers who just quit Newt Gingrich's campaign are former Perry consultants. In other words, if Perry jumps in quickly, he'll have a professional campaign team ready to go right away.

Giuliani is the more well-known of the two, meaning he may have more latitude to wait a few more weeks before declaring his intentions. But with the off-scenes "money race" tightening up among big Republican donors, both Perry and Giuliani are going to have to declare their intentions within the next month or so, to have a real shot at winning.

Dark Horses

The list of candidates (declared or not) who, realistically, have almost no chance of winning even a single primary -- much less the Republican nomination -- hasn't changed much from last time. In fact, it's exactly the same list, except that Rick Perry moved up to the white horse category. For completeness' sake, the "other" Republicans in the race (whom very few Republican voters are going to even hear about, much less vote for) are:

John Bolton, Gary Johnson, Fred Karger, Andy Martin, Jimmy McMillan, Roy Moore, Buddy Roemer.

The "B" Team

Which brings us to our biggest category -- the "B" team.

Since this is being written before the debate actually commences, there are people listed here who may indeed break out of the pack and vault themselves into frontrunner status tonight. All of them will likely be trying to accomplish this feat, but not all of them are likely to pull it off. And one in particular will be trying hardest, since it may be the last chance his campaign has of retaining any sort of relevancy. In other words, the next time we write one of these columns, this list will likely look different, but for now it is jam-packed with possibilities. Let's take them one at a time.

Michele Bachmann -- Bachmann has not, to the best of my knowledge, even formally announced her candidacy yet. But when she does, it is going to come as no surprise to anyone. Bachmann has been trying to differentiate herself from Sarah Palin, and tonight's debate will be a good place to do so, since Palin won't be on the stage. Bachmann's biggest chance (if reports are true) will be in Iowa, so look for her to play to a nationwide audience tonight, rather than a local New Hampshire one.

Herman Cain -- Cain is still riding the wave of interest he generated in the previous debate, and his polling numbers have actually broken into the double-digits of late, although not consistently -- but still, this is more than a lot of the "B" team can currently claim. Look for him to attempt to increase his name recognition and continue to capitalize on a format he does well in with the Republican primary voters. If he can generate a second polling bump after tonight, he could even approach frontrunner status -- something few would have predicted of him before the first debate.

Newt Gingrich -- Newt Gingrich has had a tough month since he announced his campaign. His first disastrous "rollout" week was followed immediately by Gingrich and his wife taking off for a two-week Mediterranean cruise. Newt also skipped a Memorial Day event in an early primary state to stay in D.C. and attend the opera. Way to show off your "man of the people" credibility, Newt! He was also the only major candidate not to visit the major yearly convention of social conservatives in person, sending a video instead. You can see why his whole campaign team got so frustrated with him that, en masse, they walked out.

Newt is now desperately clinging to relevancy, and tonight may be his last chance to prove he's serious about his run for the presidency. At this point, almost the entire media establishment has written his chances off entirely, but then the same thing happened to John McCain four years ago, so that's no indication of anything, really. But we did have to move Newt down from the "frontrunner" category this time, because he simply can't be considered such anymore. He may claw his way back, beginning tonight in a format he thinks will allow him to shine; but then again, he may not, and the whole exercise may just have been a way for him to sell his books and promote his new movie.

Jon Huntsman -- For some reason, Jon Huntsman hasn't officially announced his run yet. This is a bit strange, because outside of Utah and the Washington Beltway, nobody knows who he is. Candidates with such low name recognition normally enter the race as soon as they possibly can, in order to introduce themselves to the voters. Not only is Huntsman staying out, for now, but he's also skipping the debate tonight. Maybe he's being crafty like a fox, and waiting until some of the other second-tier candidates implode, or maybe he isn't all that serious about running. In any case, the window for him to enter the race (and still have a plausible chance of winning it) may be closing soon for Huntsman, whether he realizes it or not.

Ron Paul -- Roughly a month ago, Paul climbed into the double digits in the polling, but since that point has fallen back to his core group of supporters (in the single digits, in other words). Paul may have a good chance tonight to please the crowd, as his brand of Libertarianism is likely a better match for flinty New Englanders than other parts of the Republican primary map. Paul will likely try tonight to differentiate himself from the pack on the foreign policy front, as getting America out of its various wars is actually a pretty popular idea right now. Whether that translates into any support outside his core base remains to be seen, though.

Tim Pawlenty -- Tim Pawlenty desperately wants to be considered a frontrunner in the race. He desperately wants the mantle of the "I'm not Romney" candidate. Washington pundits have already awarded him this status, however the voters are noticeably lukewarm to a Pawlenty candidacy. His polling numbers fall behind both Herman Cain and Ron Paul in almost every recent poll. He's only broken into double digits once, since polling started for this race. That's a pretty disappointing performance for someone who is supposed to be (theoretically) one of the frontrunners at this point. So Pawlenty's got a lot to gain in tonight's debate. Look for him to be as outrageous as possible in the hopes of making some sort of mark for himself -- offering up ready-made soundbites in the hopes of some widespread media attention to boost his name recognition. This task is made harder by the other, more extreme candidates in the debate -- any one of whom may offer up even more extreme soundbites than Pawlenty can manage.

Rick Santorum -- Speaking of extreme soundbites, Rick Santorum will also be desperately vying for the media's attention tonight. Pawlenty's poll numbers are bad, but Santorum's are even worse -- only breaking 5 percent in a single poll since the campaign began. However, that poll (where Santorum charted in at 6 percent) was the most recent one, so perhaps he is seeing some movement already. Look for Santorum to try to stand out on social issues, which he feels is his strongest point. He'll also be speaking mostly to a national audience in the debates, since such social conservatism isn't as big a deal for New Hampshire Republicans.

Frontrunners

Which brings us to the frontrunners. There are only two, at this point, and nobody even knows if one of them is going to run or not. Such is the state of the Republican nomination race in June of 2011. As mentioned above, Newt Gingrich was previously in this category, but after his disastrous first month campaigning, few would argue that he can still be seen as any sort of frontrunner for the nomination. A lot of the "B" team folks would argue that they, too are frontrunners, but none of them (at this point) have a consistent record of polling behind them to bear this claim out. Of course, that may all change after tonight's debate (I'd be personally surprised if at least one of the secondary team didn't move up in the next week or so).

Sarah Palin -- Sarah Palin had lots of fun on her recent bus tour of the East Coast, not least of which was stomping all over the campaign news any of the other Republican candidates were trying to make. Rumor has it that the bus trip is a kind of "test run" for Palin's family, to see whether they're up for a full-blown nationwide campaign. But it's hard to see Palin's immediate family having the same sort of veto power over her decision to run as Mitch Daniels' family exercised. I've been saying all along that Palin is the one candidate in the Republican field who has the luxury of staying out almost as long as she wants before jumping into the campaign, due to the fact that everybody already knows her name (and also due to the nation's political media breathlessly following anything Sarah does or says, at any time or place whatsoever).

The recent release of over 24,000 pages of emails from when Palin was governor doesn't seem to have hurt her at all (despite many pouring through them last weekend, no "smoking gun" was found). Although Palin isn't going to physically be present at tonight's debate, she will definitely be a presence in the room -- especially for those candidates attempting to wield the "Tea Party candidate" banner themselves. Look for Palin to toy with her decision on running for at least another few months before she actually makes up her mind. Her performance on Fox News Sunday a few weeks ago certainly seemed like that of a presidential candidate and not a political gadfly, but whether she'll actually throw her hat in the ring or not is still anyone's guess at this point.

Mitt Romney -- Romney is without question the frontrunner the other candidates will be looking to take down in tonight's debate. Because this will be Romney's first debate appearance, political observers are going to be closely watching how intensely the others attack him and his positions, and how Romney responds to such attacks. The thing Romney's got going for him is that he would likely be the best Republican candidate in a general election against Barack Obama. Polling shows he's got the best chance of appearing moderate enough to independent voters to win the election in 2012. Paradoxically, this is his weakest point in the Republican primaries -- in a season where adherence to Tea Party orthodoxy may carry more weight than general election "electability." But the fact that all the other candidates in the field are trying to position themselves as the "not Romney" candidate makes it crystal clear that Romney is, at this point in time, the one to beat in the Republican field. Look for Romney to strongly defend his positions tonight, while at the same time couching those positions in as moderate terms as he thinks he can get away with in front of a Republican audience.

Microsoft patches critical IE9, Windows bugs

News

By Gregg Keizer

June 14, 2011 04:24 PM ET

Computerworld - Microsoft today patched 34 vulnerabilities in Windows, Internet Explorer (IE), Office and other software, 15 of them labeled "critical" by the company.

The large number of updates -- as well as the fact that Microsoft issued them two hours later than usual -- will put pressure on enterprise administrators, one expert said.

"No doubt IT administrators will have to pick and choose where to act first," said Wolfgang Kandek, chief technology officer for Qualys.

Of the 16 updates, which Microsoft calls bulletins, nine were pegged critical, the most-serious rating in the company's four-step scoring system, while the remaining seven were tagged "important," the next-most-dangerous category.

While the number of bugs patched today was significantly less than the record 64 Microsoft fixed in April, it was the second-highest total for the year. The 16 bulletins were just one off the record, also set last April.

Fifteen of the 34 total vulnerabilities were rated critical, 17 were ranked important, and two were marked as "moderate."

Microsoft picked four of the 16 updates to highlight, and urged customers to roll out the quartet as soon as possible.

"Our top priorities are MS11-050, MS11-052, MS11-043 and MS11-042," Jerry Bryant, group manager with the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC), said in an interview earlier today. Bryant listed the four in the order of priority.

Among the deploy-immediately bulletins, MS11-050 offered 11 patches for IE that Microsoft and independent experts pinned to the top of their lists.

"This one is at the top of the list, as it always is when Microsoft patches IE," said Andrew Storms, director of security operations for nCircle Security. "But it's also the first IE9 update, and certainly does look to be true that Microsoft had this bug at the time it launched IE9, or a few days later."

Storms was referring to Microsoft's testing process, which usually lasts two months or more. That timeline would have precluded an IE9 patch in April, the first update scheduled after the browser shipped.

Microsoft habitually patches IE on even-numbered months; the last time it issued a security update for its browser was in April, when it fixed five flaws. Today's, however, was the first critical update for IE9, the browser that Microsoft shipped in mid-March. Four of the 11 patches in MS11-050 affected IE9, said Microsoft.

Nine of the 11 bugs in IE that Microsoft patched today could be exploited by attackers with a "drive-by" attack that requires users to simply visit a malicious Web site.

MS11-052 also affected IE, although Microsoft labeled it as a Windows update.

"The vulnerability is in Windows, but the attack vector is through Internet Explorer," said Bryant. "But IE9 is not affected by this update. [The issue] was addressed before IE9 released..., so that's part of the 'newer is better' message we're getting out to customers," Bryant added.
