Low-cost India airlines take price war to overseas routes (Reuters)

MUMBAI (Reuters) ? Indian full service airlines, buffeted by high fuel costs and intense competition, face new headwinds on their lucrative international routes as budget carriers launch services with rock-bottom fares.

With low-cost carriers launching routes using narrow-body aircraft to overseas destinations within five hours flying time of India, full-service players are being forced to respond with similar no-frills offerings on popular and profitable routes.

Budget airline IndiGo, which in June firmed up a $16.2 billion order for 180 single-aisle Airbus aircraft, has received government approval to fly to Singapore, Bangkok, Dubai and Muscat, and is luring passengers with round-trip fares as low as 9,999 rupees ($220).

By comparison, full service carriers charge between 17,000 and 22,000 rupees for economy class Mumbai-Singapore routes booked a month in advance.

"The entry of IndiGo will help in growing the market. Low cost carriers are creating a new market with a new breed of customers who did not fly international earlier," said Kapil Kaul, chief executive for the Indian subcontinent and Middle East at the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA).

Under Indian aviation laws, an airline needs to locally operate for five years before being assigned overseas routes.

Low-cost operator SpiceJet, with just six international flights now among its 200 daily flights, plans to expand its overseas network and has applied for several international routes, CEO Neil Mills said.

"Low cost carriers are much better poised to take advantage of the growth, because India is a very price-sensitive market," Mills told Reuters.

Full-service carriers Jet, Air India and Kingfisher Airlines already compete on regional international flights with foreign full-service rivals such as Emirates, Thai Airways, Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific.

Low-cost carriers already flying international routes to India include Malaysia's AirAsia as well as flydubai and Air Arabia, both based in the United Arab Emirates. Singapore Airlines also plans a low-cost carrier.

AirAsia, which in June announced a record aircraft order worth $18.2 billion, is expected to use much of its new fleet to link Southeast Asia to India and China.

Asia is expected to account for more than half of global airline profits this year, according to the International Air Transport Association.

FULL SERVICE, LOW FARES

Jet Airways, India's biggest carrier by market share, said it plans to introduce more low fare flights on shorter international routes to take on emerging rivals such as IndiGo and SpiceJet.

"Globally the push towards low-cost is real," said Sudheer Raghavan, chief commercial officer at Jet.

"We will use the narrow bodied aircraft for low fare routes," Raghavan said, referring to international routes under five hours.

Lucrative international routes have helped Indian carriers offset often loss-making domestic routes.

Jet's average revenue per passenger in April-June was $112 for domestic operations, compared with about $275 for international operations, which account for more than half its revenue.

Low-cost domestic competition from Spicejet, IndiGo, and GoAir has forced full service carriers Jet and Kingfisher to ramp-up no-frills offerings. In exchange for low fares, travelers pay for their meals, go without perks such as seat-back video monitors, and often get less leg space.

Struggling state-run Air India, meanwhile, has slashed fares in recent months in order to arrest falling market share, adding to price competition.

Nearly three out of four tickets Jet sells locally is in the low cost segment, while Kingfisher Airlines is expanding domestic connectivity under its low fare brand Kingfisher Red.

Analysts now predict a pressure on international yields as well.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch, in late July, said that the profitable international segments for legacy carriers are set to face increasing competition on economy seats from low-cost domestic and international rivals.

"This sudden surge in LCCs (low-cost carriers) could keep the international economy yields under check," the bank said.

Tropical Storm Jose brushes past Bermuda

(AP) ? Tropical Storm Jose spun just to the west of Bermuda on Sunday, buffeting the wealthy British territory with gusty winds and intermittent showers before heading out into the open Atlantic.

The 10th named storm of the season passed about 80 miles (130 kilometers) northwest of Bermuda with sustained winds of 45 mph (75 kph), causing some storm surge in western parts of the isolated island chain. There were no immediate reports of any damage or injuries, and a tropical storm warning was lifted Sunday night.

"The tropical storm-force winds are limited to our western marine area. They aren't actually reaching the island," meteorologist Ken Smith of the Bermuda Weather Service said earlier in the day.

Intermittent showers mixed with sunshine in Bermuda, which lies about 580 miles (933 kilometers) east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, already battered by Hurricane Irene. Many islanders headed to church in their Sunday best.

A street market popular with tourists was canceled on St. George's, but most Sunday events went on normally.

Forecasts had said that Jose, which formed early Sunday, could drop up to 3 inches (8 centimeters) of rain on Bermuda, but there were no sustained downpours reported in the territory.

Jose was moving north at about 20 mph (31 kph) Sunday night, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, said.

U.S. meteorologist Jeff Masters, who writes a popular weather blog, said Tropical Storm Jose would not survive long due to strong upper-level wind shear from Irene, which swirled over northern New England toward Canada on Sunday night after weakening to a tropical storm from a once-powerful hurricane.

Smith said Jose was expected to weaken into a tropical depression Monday and later dissipate.

Earlier this month, Tropical Storm Gert skirted past Bermuda, kicking up choppy seas along the island chain's coast but passing well east of the tiny British archipelago. It caused no serious damage.

AP EXCLUSIVE: US-Taliban talks were making headway (AP)

KABUL, Afghanistan ? Direct U.S. talks with the Taliban had evolved to a substantive negotiation before Afghan officials, nervous that the secret and independent talks would undercut President Hamid Karzai, scuttled them, Afghan and U.S. officials told The Associated Press.

Featured prominently in the talks was the whereabouts and eventual release of U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl of Hailey, Idaho, who was captured more than two years ago in eastern Afghanistan, according to a senior Western diplomat in the region and a childhood friend of the Taliban negotiator, Tayyab Aga.

The U.S. negotiators asked Aga what could be done to gain Bergdahl's release. The discussion did not get into specifics but Aga discussed the release of Afghan prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and in Afghanistan at Bagram Air Field.

Published reports about the clandestine meetings ended the talks abruptly, and sent Aga into hiding.

Collapse of the direct talks between Aga and U.S. officials probably spoiled the best chance yet at reaching Mullah Mohammed Omar, considered the linchpin to ending the Taliban fight against the U.S.-backed government in Afghanistan. The contacts were preliminary but had begun to bear fruit, Afghan and U.S. officials said.

Perhaps most importantly they offered the tantalizing prospect of a brokered agreement between the U.S. and the Taliban ? one that would allow the larger reconciliation of the Taliban into Afghanistan political life to move forward. The United States has not committed to any such deal, but the Taliban wants security assurances from Washington.

In a series of interviews with diplomats, current and former Taliban, Afghan government officials and a close childhood friend of Aga, the AP learned Aga is hiding in Europe, and is afraid to return to Pakistan fearing reprisals.

The United States has had no direct contact with him for months.

A senior U.S. official acknowledged that the talks imploded because of the leak and that Aga, while alive, had disappeared. The U.S. will continue to pursue talks, the official said. Current and former U.S. officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the talks.

The U.S. acknowledged the meetings after Karzai, who apparently fears being sidelined by U.S.-Taliban talks, confirmed published accounts about them in June, but has never publicly detailed the content, format or participants.

The first was held in late 2010 followed by at least two other meetings in early spring of this year, the former U.S. official said. The sessions were held in Germany and Qatar, the official said.

The childhood friend of Aga's, who spoke to the AP on condition he not be identified because he feared retaliation, said Aga was in Germany. A diplomat in the region said Aga fled to a European country after his contacts with the United States were revealed.

The talks were deliberately revealed by someone in the presidential palace, where Karzai's office is located, said a Western and an Afghan official. The reason was Karzai's animosity toward the U.S. and fear that any agreement Washington brokered would undermine his authority, they said.

The AP sought comment from Karzai's office but was referred to palace press department spokesman Hamid Elmi, who did not answer his phone during repeated calls.

Pakistan had also been kept in the dark about the talks, people knowledgeable about them said. An Afghan official with contacts with the Taliban said the insurgents decided not to tell Pakistan about the meetings with the United States.

At the time of the leak, Washington had already offered small concessions as "confidence-building measures," a former senior U.S. official said. They were aimed at developing a rapport and moving talks forward, said a current U.S. official on condition he not be identified because of the sensitivity of the topic.

The concessions included treating the Taliban and al-Qaida differently under international sanctions. The Taliban had argued that while al-Qaida is focused on worldwide jihad against the West, Taliban militants have focused on Afghanistan and have shown little interest in attacking targets abroad.

Other goodwill gestures that were not made public included Aga's safe passage to Germany, U.S. officials said. The U.S. also offered assurances that it would not block the Taliban from opening an office in a third country, the official said.

Aga slowly established his bona fides with the U.S. officials, who had initial doubts both about his identity and his level of contact and influence with Omar, former and current U.S. official with knowledge of the discussion said. For example, a coded reference to the talks appeared on a Taliban-affiliated website following one meeting, just as Aga said it would, one official said.

Aga sought the freedom of Taliban fighters in U.S. custody in Guantanamo Bay and Bagram Air Field, north of the Afghan capital where an estimated 600 Afghans are being held. Still at Guantanamo Bay is former Taliban Defense Ministry Chief of Staff Mullah Mohammed Fazil, Taliban intelligence official Abdul Haq Wasiq and former Herat governor Mullah Khairullah Khairkhwa.

Afghanistan's High Peace Council tasked by Karzai with finding a negotiated settlement with insurgents has requested Khairkhwa's release.

A former U.S. official familiar with the talks said the loss of the Aga contact dismayed and angered the U.S. side, and further eroded thin trust in Karzai. There is a difference of opinion among U.S. diplomats, military officials and others about how directly Karzai should be blamed, but several officials agreed that the leak was an attempt to torpedo a diplomatic channel that Karzai and his inner circle worried would sideline and undercut the Afghan leader.

As the Afghan war slides into its 10th year and Washington plans to withdraw its combat forces by the end of 2014, a negotiated settlement between the Karzai government and the Taliban has become a stated goal for the United States. It is the centerpiece of efforts by Marc Grossman, the U.S. special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Karzai has launched a separate peace outreach, with the High Peace Council representing numerous political factions.

A member of that High Peace Council, who asked not to be identified by name so he could talk candidly, told the AP that the leaking of the talks reveals the level of mistrust and the lack of coordination among the key players in any eventual peace deal.

He said all the key players ? the United States, Afghan government, Afghan National Security Council and the High Peace Council ? are holding separate and secret talks with their own contacts within the insurgency.

The United States, for example, has also held secret talks with Ibrahim Haqqani, the brother of Jalaluddin Haqqani, who heads the notorious Haqqani network considered by U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan to be their biggest threat. That contact was confirmed by officials from Pakistan, Afghanistan and the U.S.

Karzai met with representatives of wanted rebel leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, who is seeking greater involvement at the peace table and direct talks with the United States, said diplomats in the region.

The flurry of meetings the United States is holding with the various factions in the Afghan conflict has also extended to Pakistan, where the most powerful insurgents have found safe havens.

A month ago, U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Sen. John Kerry and Pakistan's Army chief of staff Gen. Ashfaq Pervez Kayani met for a marathon eight hours in a Gulf country. Peace negotiations with Afghanistan's insurgents featured prominently, said both Pakistani and U.S. officials who would not be identified by name because of the secret nature of the meeting.

A U.S. official familiar with the talks said Kayani made a pitch during his marathon meeting with Kerry that Pakistan take on a far larger role in Afghanistan peacemaking. The United States considers Pakistan an essential part of an eventual deal, but neither the U.S. nor Pakistan trusts the other's motives in Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, an unexpected consequence of attempts to find peace with the Taliban has been the rearming of the so-called Northern Alliance, that represents Afghanistan's ethnic minorities and who were partnered with the coalition at the outset of Operation Enduring Freedom to topple the Taliban regime.

For the warlords that make up the Northern Alliance, Martine van Bijlert, co-director and co-founder of the Afghan Analyst Network in the capital, Kabul, talk of peace threatens their survival.

Warlords-cum-government ministers and vice presidents are watching attempts at finding a peaceful end to the war with trepidation, each wondering "what if it unravels, who is going to come after me? Will I be the weakest in the room? They are feeling very vulnerable," van Bijlert said.

Common antibiotic helps lethal lung disease

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2011) ? A common antibiotic can help reduce the severe wheezing and other acute symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, according to a large, multicenter clinical trial sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and conducted at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).

The study appears in the August 25 New England Journal of Medicine.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, is the third leading cause of death in the United States, surpassing strokes in 2008 -- heart disease and cancer are the top killers. It affects more than 12 million people in the United States. Worldwide, it is the fourth leading cause of death.

"This is a terrible disease that destroys the patient's lung function,'' said co-author Stephen C. Lazarus, a UCSF professor of medicine and chairman of the steering committee of the National Institutes of Health-funded network that conducted the study. "People with it become short of breath doing routine daily activities. For those with severe disease, it's like suffocating.

"This study suggests that regular use of a commonly prescribed antibiotic can reduce the frequency of exacerbations in the disease,'' he said.

Flare-ups, or exacerbations, are to COPD what heart attacks are to coronary artery disease: acute manifestations of a chronic disease that often hasten the progressive deterioration of the patient. The exacerbations are responsible for many doctor visits, trips to the emergency room and hospitalizations. Patients with acute exacerbations have a more rapid decline in lung function and a higher risk of death.

In the United States, most cases of the disease are due to smoking. In undeveloped countries, the illness is largely caused by biomass fuels, which are often used for heating and cooking indoors without a chimney.

The medical community both in the United States and worldwide has long been puzzled about how best to treat COPD. The antibiotic azithromycin -- already widely prescribed for numerous bacterial infections including pneumonia and strep throat -- is often given for flare-ups, generally for 5 to 10 days.

The NIH study was designed to examine whether that antibiotic would be effective in reducing COPD flare-ups. The trial involved 1,142 randomized participants from 17 medical sites who were at least 40 years old, had a clinical diagnosis of COPD, and had smoked for at least 10 years. The trial subjects received either azithromycin or a placebo daily for one year in addition to their usual care.

Those receiving azithromycin were 27% less likely to experience an acute flare-up which occurred after 266 days on median, compared to 174 days for those receiving the placebo. Patients taking the antibiotic also responded more favorably on questionnaires that asked them to assess their breathing ability and their general well-being.

"If we can improve the quality of life for patients with this disease and slow their loss of lung function, then we have done something really important for them,'' said Lazarus.

The researchers noted a side effect of adding the antibiotic to the usual treatment regimen: a small percentage of the patients suffered slight hearing loss.

Prescott G. Woodruff, MD, MPH, a UCSF associate professor of medicine and associate director of the UCSF Airway Clinical Research Center, is also a co-author of the study.

Scientists in the UCSF Pulmonary & Critical Care Division have been working for decades on basic and clinical research to learn more about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and to devise new treatment approaches. They are currently recruiting for another study to see if a drug commonly used to reduce cholesterol is effective at preventing COPD flare-ups.

The new COPD study was supported by grants from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health; the COPD Clinical Research Network is supported by the Division of Lung Diseases of the NHLBI. The study was carried out by the COPD Clinical Research Network, a consortium of research centers funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

Teen shot in Chile anti-Pinera protest dies (Reuters)

SANTIAGO (Reuters) ? A Chilean teenager died early on Friday a day after being shot in the chest during massive protests in the capital against President Sebastian Pinera, police said, the first fatality in months of social unrest.

Police said the youth was 14 years old. Local media identified him as Manuel Gutierrez, and said he was shot near a security barricade as protesters battled police in Santiago on Thursday, the second day of a two-day strike against unpopular Pinera marked by violent clashes and sporadic looting.

Local radio said witnesses blamed police for firing the shots.

"The death of any citizen is a very serious situation," said Rodrigo Ubilla, undersecretary at the Interior Ministry. "We should all be sad today because we have not been able to move forward peacefully."

"The solutions to big problems in this country do not lie in throwing stones, bombs and attacking people, the solution lies in talking," he added. Ubilla had put the youth's age at 16.

Led by students demanding free education, hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets in recent months to call for greater distribution of the income of a copper price boom in the world's top producer of the metal.

On Thursday, youths blocked roads, threw rocks and set fire to piles of trash at intersections in Santiago and other cities to block traffic. Police used water cannon and tear gas to defuse the latest social unrest against conservative billionaire Pinera's policies.

The government said more than 1,300 people have been detained since Wednesday and several police officers were badly wounded -- two of them shot -- as violence flared when dozens of shops and supermarkets were looted and buses damaged.

Organizers said around 600,000 people joined Thursday's protest across Chile. Reuters reporters estimated crowds in the capital alone at around 200,000 people.

Operations at some of the world's biggest copper mines were not affected by the protests, which also seek to pressure the government into raising wages and revamping the constitution and tax system.

While Latin America's model economy is seen expanding 6.6 percent this year and is an investor magnet thanks to prudent fiscal and monetary policies, many ordinary Chileans feel they are not sharing in the economic miracle.

Investors, long used to economic stability, are weighing risk, although markets have taken the protests in stride.

Previous governments have faced one-day national strikes but this was the first 48-hour stoppage since the 1973-1990 Augusto Pinochet dictatorship. A recent poll showed Pinera as the least popular president since Pinochet's rule.

Even a major cabinet reshuffle last month, the second since Pinera took power in March 2010, has failed to quell unrest.

The unrest has been a lightning rod for wider protests from environmentalists to copper miners

Workers at some of the world's biggest copper mines have staged strikes of their own to demand a bigger share of windfall copper profits. Workers at BHP Billiton's Escondida, the world's No.1 copper mine, halted a two-week strike earlier this month that stoked global supply fears.

High School Sports Future Looks Bleak Next Year | News | Downtown ...

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jon Fox is passionate about high school sports.

But facing teacher layoffs or sports cuts, he knows where he stands.

He was forced to turn to fundraisers and private companies this year to save some school sports like cross country and golf. Other sports like wrestling and lacrosse still need more money to have a season.

But Fox said it will be tough to raise that money year after year, and he worries he will be in the same situation next school year.

He encourages people to contact state lawmakers to support funding for school sports and education. Fox said Duval County is looking at another $61 million in cuts unless the budgeting model changes.

Business Sales Coach for Introverts and Shy : Start with Your ...

Solutions most sought and frustrations most felt are being shared in my online survey for the needs of a more introverted person in business. One of the recurring themes out of 15 or so that came up in different ways revolved around - productivity.

One person asked it this way: I need to set better priorities. How do I do that when I am already pressed for time?

Start with being clear on your values. Values help you to focus and be clear about what is important to you. They can help you determine your priorities. I find most people aren?t clear on values. For example, my top three values are my health, my family, my authenticity or integrity. Recently I had a dilemma: my husband switched his birthday celebration from the actual day to two days before. I had committed to a women?s group event. But, I?m clear on my values. Can you guess what I did? I cancelled my reservation for the women?s event and I am going to celebrate with my husband. I don?t need to second-guess this. There are many lists online for you to get clear on your values if you haven?t done so: http://www.listofvalues.com/ is a good one with both a list and definitions. I suggest you first go through and choose your top 20 and then narrow things down to your top 10.

Values clarity will go a long way is securing a foundation for better priortization.

Next move to the time management category of priorities. A way to set better priorities is to identify your activities as to: URGENT ? like due dates, projects, emergency and crisis. Things that are not on your calendar all the time but add to the greatest productivity. These things get done first. Then, go to: NOT URGENT ? things that add to your quality of life like planning, preparation, scheduling, networking, relationship building. These activities would be next to do on your list. Then you have: URGENT BUT not IMPORTANT! Apparent emergencies, most are a phantom of #1 but usually not important. For example, (and I have not yet mastered this but am getting better!) checking email ALL day long. Say no to this. Check in just 2 or 3 times a day. Then there is what my coach last year called, BRAINWASHER ACTION. Watching tv, computer games, activity that make you think you are creating a quality of life but not really. These things would be last on your list. This 4 Way Productivity Approach is something that Stephen Covey talks about.

Another technique to be productive is called Focus Five. Set your top five priorities for EACH day. Not a long list like you might get in with the 4 Way Productivity Approach above, but just 5 priorities. They could be anything that can move you further ahead in just 30 to 90 minute chunks of time usually. You FOCUS on these until they are all done.

Try one of these approaches for 90 days, then try the other. Measure which one your best results are and go another 90 days with it. Some of us need to switch up tactics to set better priorities.

How do you set better priorities? There are many ideas floating around but - what works for you?

Evaluate yourself and the relationship. Are you able to continue to contribute a constructive force within the relationship? Can you recognize some of the patterns that were hurting the relationship? Are there different points of view that you could have taken towards your partner that could have provided a healthier interaction? You must consider whether your partner is also willing to contribute to healing the relationship. If the feeling is mutual, there is a good chance of reconnecting and saving your relationship.

After identifying the destructive patterns on your half of the relationship, doing your best to correct them, and finding a mutual intent to heal, you can begin to talk to your partner about your roles in the relationship. A calm, open and honest approach is the best when communicating. Listen closely, and caringly to your partner's view. Quality listening skills are important to heal. A willingness to listen openly and refrain from any negative emotional outbursts can be some of the best medicine in healing emotional wounds. If you hear something that goes against your viewpoint, do your best to remain calm and collected. It can be uncomfortable to listen and accept a very different viewpoint, but if you really want to repair the bond, the air must be cleared. Healing a relationship will not happen overnight. Patience is very vital. Don't let false expectations get in the way. Remember to accept you partner just as much as you would like to be accepted by him or her. Unconditional acceptance of your partner is the best way to heal.

Love is very mysterious, and complications are normal in any relationship. To remain strong in withstanding challenges together can be the most valuable and rewarding building experiences in a relationship. Taking a humorous and lighthearted attitude with you can make the process work more smoothly. The force of love is the most powerful force there is, so remember to treat each other with respect once the bond is healed.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Here's what passes for the new normal on the stock market: The Dow Jones industrial average soars 200 points in the morning, gives up nearly all those gains by lunch, then jumps back another 100 points by the early afternoon.

It was the latest wild ride for stocks this month, which has seen eight days of more than 200-point swings in the Dow.

Investors increasingly believe the U.S. may fall into another recession. Manufacturing dropped sharply last month; there are concerns that consumers will cut back their spending, especially after they've watched stocks plunge; and earlier in August the U.S. government's credit rating was downgraded. All that led investors to dump risky assets, leaving the Dow down 10 percent since the month began.

Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at Standard & Poor's equity research, cautioned against reading too much into the market's early jump.

"A two-hour rally isn't enough to change the trend," Stovall said. "It's natural in a declining market to have some days that run counter to the overall trend." The S&P 500 index has lost 12 percent this month, putting the broad market measure on course for its worst August since 1998.

After falling four weeks in a row, some stocks are appearing too cheap for investors to pass up, Stovall said.

Many traders are looking ahead to a speech by Ben Bernanke, the Federal Reserve chairman, at an annual meeting in Jackson Hole, Wyo. on Friday. Last year, Bernanke's speech at Jackson Hole set the stage for a $600 billion program to stimulate the economy through buying Treasury bonds. Some analysts believe the Fed may make another move to help the flagging U.S. economy.

Stovall thinks some investors are banking on Bernanke offering some soothing words in his speech Friday. "Even if the Fed just lets people know they're not asleep, that would help," he said.

The Dow was up 1 percent at 10,939 in early afternoon trading.

S&P 500 rose 11 points to 1,135 after earlier rising as much as 22 points. The Nasdaq was up 26 points, or 1 percent, to 2,368.

The Chicago Board of Options Exchange's volatility index has soared 68 percent this month. That's a sign investors are anticipating more wide swings in the S&P 500, the index most professional investors use.

Treasury bond prices and gold have been rising this month as investors seek refuge from the turmoil in stocks. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note dipped below 2 percent last week, a record low. The yield was trading at 2.10 percent Monday afternoon. Yields on bonds fall when demand for them increases.

Gold rose 2 percent to $1,890. Gold has risen 16 percent so far in August.

Seven of the 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 rose. Telecom stocks rose 1 percent, the most of any industry in the index. Hewlett-Packard Co. rose 4 percent, the most of the 30 large companies in the Dow Jones industrial average.

Bank stocks, which have been getting clobbered over the past month, fell again. JPMorgan Chase & Co. fell 2 percent, and U.S. Bancorp fell 1.4 percent.

Boeing Co. rose 1.6 percent after Britain's Royal Air Force said it would buy 14 Chinook helicopters for $1.6 billion.

Lowe's Cos. rose 1.5 percent. The home improvement retailer said it will buy back up to $5 billion stock over the next two to three years. Last week, Lowe's lowered its sales forecast for the second half of the year as shoppers grow more worried about the economy.

Stocks have fallen for each of the past four weeks on worries that the U.S. might enter another recession. The S&P 500 index lost 4.7 percent last week. The sharpest drops came Thursday with news of weaker manufacturing in the mid-Atlantic states and an increase in the number of people who applied for unemployment benefits.

No major economic reports are due out Monday. Later in the week, traders will be sorting through figures on new home sales, chain store sales, durable goods orders and weekly claims for unemployment benefits to see if another recession could be on the way. The government will also release revised figures for second-quarter economic growth Friday. Another significant revision downward could alarm investors.

Belgian soccer game halted by Fukushima comments

updated 3:47 p.m. ET Aug. 20, 2011

BRUSSELS - A Belgian soccer game was temporarily stopped on Saturday after visiting fans taunted Japanese goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima over the recent Fukushima nuclear disaster.

The referee halted the match between Lierse SK and Beerschot after some Beerschot supporters began chanting: "Kawashima-Fukushima."

The match resumed after a delay of several minutes and ended in a 1-1 draw. Kawashima left the field in tears and said later he could forgive many insults, "but not this."

The Japanese player said: "Using the drama of Fukushima in this manner is not at all funny."

An earthquake and tsunami in March devastated large parts of Japan's northeast coastline and left over 20,000 people dead or missing. Another 100,000 people were evacuated because of radiation leakage from the damaged Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant.

The Truth About Running an Internet Business from Home | Social ...

I?ll get a website, put up some merchandise or offer a service, and the orders will pour in. Fantasy! The truth is, running an Internet business from home is probably twice as hard as running a traditional brick and mortar business. Allow me to explain.

1. Getting the word out: Just because you build it does not mean that they will come ? customers that is. There are literally millions of websites totaling billions, yes Billions, of pages. How will you get found? Driving traffic to an Internet site is not, contrary to popular belief, easy.

First, your customers need to have a computer ? with an Internet connection. Hopefully, a fast one. If they only log on at work, then there goes weekend and/or spur-of-the-moment, I-saw-it-from-the-window- and-had-to-have-it sales.

Solution: Reach customers via their mailbox, in addition to their inbox. You can do this in your jammies, but you must put in the same hours as someone with a brick-and-mortar store because you miss out on an obvious stream of income ? in-store sales.

Some cost-effective, offline methods to reach customers are postcards and press releases.

A cheap online marketing idea is to put a subscriber box on each page of your website. This costs very little in money and zilch in time once it is set up. Employing traditional with online marketing methods will drive continual traffic to your site.

2. Make a quick connection: If you want your customers to reach you online, you had better have fast-loading graphics. If your graphics don?t load/begin to load in 3-5 seconds, most customers won?t stick around. They will be off to your competitor?s site.

Why Supermoms Should Chill (LiveScience.com)

Trying to have it all could be bad for your mental health, according to a new study that finds that "supermoms" have higher rates of depression compared with working moms who let things slide.

The research, presented Aug. 20 at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association in Las Vegas, finds that working is good for mothers' mental health. But among working mothers, the least depressed are those who don't expect to combine work and family life seamlessly, said study researcher Katrina Leupp, a graduate student at the University of Washington in Seattle.

"Ascribing to an ideal that women can do it all actually increased the level of depressive symptoms compared to women who were more skeptical of whether or not work and family can be balanced," Leupp told LiveScience.

Women's work

Leupp analyzed survey responses from 1,600 married women who participated in a large survey called the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. In 1987, the women answered questions to gauge their support of women's employment, including whether they agreed with statements such as "Women are much happier if they stay at home and take care of their children."

In 1992 and 1994, the now 40-year-old women answered questions about their symptoms of depression. Like earlier studies, the survey data indicated that women who worked outside the home had fewer symptoms of depression, perhaps because outside work gives women more social interaction, more varied activities and a larger income, Leupp said.

Among the employed women, though, the cheeriest were those who had indicated in their younger years the least support for women combining career and family. The results held even after controlling for earlier levels of depression.

"Somewhat ironically, women who don't expect to be able to balance work and family have better mental health than those who do," Leupp said.

Having it all

The study didn't pinpoint why optimistic views of balancing family and motherhood would correlate with later depression. The reason may come down to expectations and real-world work environments, Leupp said. Women who expect to have it all probably come up against workplaces that aren't designed with work-life balance in mind, she said. When they can't balance everything perfectly, these supermoms are more likely to feel frustration and guilt.

"I think this research really speaks to a mismatch between women's expectations and the actual structure of the workplace," Leupp said.

The takeaway for working moms is to temper their optimism about juggling parenting and employment, Leupp said, and not to blame themselves if they struggle.

"Recognize that if it feels difficult, it's because it is difficult," she said.

How the Google-Motorola deal will spawn a new OS (Digital Trends)

phone-os-conceptThis week I?m at a convention of analysts from the major firms who cover mobile devices. Most of the major names are here and, as you might imagine, much of the discussion is on the acquisition of Motorola Mobile by Google. While I don?t want to imply that all of us are in agreement ? we seldom are ? a theme has emerged in terms of consensus Android as an open OS is pretty much done. Google is now on the path to becoming much like Apple, with Android as an integrated solution. This could actually improve the quality of future Android phones, but it is also creating a substantial demand for something to take its place.

Android is dead, the Android Phone is born

The first part of this growing consensus is that by buying Motorola, Google made it nearly impossible to sustain relationships with the other licensees. This group of mostly mobile phone companies largely either didn?t adopt or abandoned Symbian after Nokia bought it, and avoids with a passion supporting any common platform that is tied to a competitor. It simply puts them at too great a disadvantage. Nokia actually went farther than Google is going to create separation between Symbian and its handset business, and it clearly wasn?t far enough.

Handset makers and carriers (firms that supply the cell phone service) are now in an almost panic as they look for a multi-vendor common solution that can take the place of Android.

Windows Phone 7

This provides a significant advantage for Windows Phone 7, but many of the phone makers have been burned by this platform in the past, and the carriers seem to have written it off. What is interesting is that the carriers and the phone makers are at cross purposes here. The carriers want the Droid model where they can specify products (phones, apps, services) that are unique to them and lock customers into them. In short, the carriers didn?t like the Android model that much anyway, and see the Windows Phone platform as too similar. After all, both create loyalty to the platform and provide portability for customers, something carriers really don?t like about the iPhone.

The phone makers didn?t like the fact that Google didn?t listen to them, and both the carriers and phone makers are convinced that Microsoft won?t listen to them either. Case in point: The phone makers wanted a tablet OS from Microsoft based on the Windows Phone platform, and Microsoft told them ?no.? That doesn?t work for them. So, at least for now, the Windows Phone OS isn?t getting much lift from this.

WebOS

Another platform that could have moved on this opportunity is HP?s webOS, but it has the same problem Android and Symbian had; it is tied back to a company that builds smartphones and tablets. While none of the cell phone makers take HP seriously here, they don?t want to fund a competitor. In addition, apparently the webOS licensing costs exceed substantially what they might be willing to pay. So, for different reasons, webOS isn?t getting any air from this either at the moment. In fact, it?s getting even less consideration than Microsoft?s platform is.

hp-touchpad

Wrapping up: The Mystery OS

I???m seeing rumblings of another platform entering the market to address the opportunity the Google move has created. Apparently a number of my peers are in the know on this, but wisely aren???t talking, because I???m getting covert grins and knowing winks. My expectation is that this new OS will appear sometime in the next 18 months and that, until then, most of the Android makers will likely have to stay the course. The difficulty for this new OS is to reconcile the carrier needs for a platform that belongs to them with the needs of the phone makers to recreate what they had with Android.

So the expected outcome is that Googorola (Google + Motorola) will see quality improvements more in line with the Mac platform, but Android will likely evaporate from all of the other makers. In effect, fewer but better (in terms of reliability) phones should result. This platform and Apple could eventually divide the market.

Wild cards are HP and Microsoft, who will have to rethink their strategies to compete and the emergence of a new platform to fill the gap where Android used to be. But new platforms typically take at least two years to mature, suggesting most won?t care that much about it until 2013 at the earliest. A lot can happen over the next 2.5 years, so all this means is that, given most of you buy phones every two or so years, this won?t impact your buying decisions this year. After that, you may have a new choice, a Mystery OS.

One final thought: Google currently appears to be trying to have this both ways, which could significantly slow its ability to bring out a better, iPhone-like, integrated product. That should help the emergence of this as yet unannounced new OS significantly. Oh boy, yet another OS. I?ll bet you can hardly wait.

Articles 20VN | The Process Of A Miracle... An Experiment Of Sorts ...

Is it possible to change one?s life in the course of thirty days? To have such transformations occur in which the seemingly limited capacity of comprehension can stretch past it?s own boundaries into the untapped potential of possibilities?
I intend to find out through this experiment!

A miracle defined, is an event that is unexplained by the laws of nature... Ok, so what does that mean?

My own interpretation follows this line of reason; that my own view of my personal circumstances or situations openly enter into the realm of the unknown. Deep within the prison cell of my beliefs, my perceptions freely expand to experience life at another level, beyond the depths of reason.

Essentially my beliefs become non-existent in the ever-increasing freedom of my awareness. The potential power of the universe unleashes itself to manifest within my life as an event ,

Only to be described by myself as well as others as a miracle.

So what is this miracle transformation I am intending to occur within the next thirty days? In order for that to be clear I need to explain the current situation or my perception of it for that matter.

I made a decision two years ago that I would go to any lengths to completely change my life. To discard ALL of the beliefs about what I learned or thought I knew. Permitting myself to heal from the limitations I clung to in desperation; living my life in the cesspool of heroin addiction.

I lived in the shadows of existence in a paper bag of hopelessness, fighting for years to stop. Each failed attempt only reinforced the reality of my life as the expression of the clich?

?Once a junkie, always a junkie.?

On September 4th, 2005? Instead of fighting the addiction? I began to fight for me. Understanding that the person reflected back to me in the mirror was not who I wanted to be or anything close to I really was.

In order to reclaim the bits and pieces of who I truly was I need I needed a new canvas of life to paint myself on. I needed to forget every belief I held in my consciousness. Thus initiating the process of the miracle to occur within my own personal existence. The re-creation of myself, which simply is the person I am today.

Some may not understand this as a miracle or even dismiss it as one. For those who have had the effects of addiction within their own or by default by those they love; know that it?s a miracle. Because the sad, sad truth of addiction is that more die and suffer in it?s prison, then those who escape to freedom.

On September 4, 2007, it will be exactly two years since I stuck that needle in my arm for the last time. My life since then has become more then anything I had ever believed possible and continues to be so. I believe I can initiate yet another miracle at this point in time simply because I made a decision that it will be so.

Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote,

?Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen.?

I know this to be true for my life is a physical manifestation of the decision I made close to two years ago. It was not easy, very unpleasant at times. But I had the willingness and allowed this process by permitting a ?Higher Power? to set the ground rules. Initially this was the staff at the Detox, then the counselor?s in rehab and those running the outpatient facility.

I surrendered my life of distorted self-sufficiency to that of the welfare system. I relinquished my life to anyone and anything that had more of a clue how to live other then myself. I finally understood, what I knew about life equaled roughly ten hospital Detox?s, three trips to rehabs and several outpatient facilities a trip to jail and too much self inflicted misery..

I?m smart, but my intelligence had nothing to do with creating the life I dreamed of as a little girl. In fact I had created the exact opposite?. a freaking nightmare not only for me but all those that had the unfortunate experience of crossing my path during the years of my active addiction. To put it simply, I was NOT a nice person.

Today I am closer to the person I want to be, closer to the person I really am. But at the moment I?m flailing, I really have no clue. Another junction in the so-called crossroads of life and the signpost are blank. You see this is all new to me, I have not yet written any pages in this part of the book of my life. A wise man by the name ?Rev.? once told me,

?Life is a book. Each day we write a page in this book by virtue of our behaviors. No erasures allowed!?

I can?t change anything that I may have done in my life weather it be good bad or indifferent. But I can write a new story from this point on. I have the power to re-create my life and
re-create myself.

I chose to heal. Heal myself from all the mis-information I gathered from all the other mis-informed people by default. I made a decision choosing what I wanted to experience in this life, instead of clinging to the hopes I allowed others to paint my dreams on.

Those that know me, know that after working at my job for close to two years I just quit. That little voice within spoke volumes of truth that echoed through the illusion of the reality I held on to. I couldn?t ignored the truth that no one would have the power for me to live my dreams, except me.

I always thought of ?risk? as something in which I would lose something. What I?ve come to realize though is risk is what I don?t stand to gain if not seized when it presents itself as the opportunity of change.

I?m not interested in slaving away at a job for years waiting for the day I retire to ?then? live the life I want. I?m not interested in living each day chasing after the illusion of tomorrow and all that it promises, because I lose today.

That?s what happened I worked like a dog for the past year and a half, barely scraping by. Thinking it was the way to get where I wanted in life. But there is no ?there? so to speak, there is only here. And I want every moment ?here? to be one in which reflects a life lived in the unlimited possibilities and not one lived in limitations.

So now here is where I explain the reason for this experiment. The day I walked out of my job, I had no back up plan and no idea of what was going to happen. All I knew that another chapter of my life was about to be written and it was not going to be a chapter I already lived.
I started a website, an initial step in creating more of what I preferred in life. Using my artistic talents to do SOMETHING.

But I had a thought, which then led to an idea, which then led to my website. I think it has potential, I know I have potential. I just need a catalyst to ?Start? the reaction.
That?s where this experiment comes in. Is it possible to reach over one million people with one idea? To have others read this and participate in the process of a miracle unfolding? I believe so, but I need to know who else believes in the possibilities.

I send out a lot of e-mails and I get a pretty good response with some of these experiments and now I?m taking it to the next level.

I believe this is a kind, generous universe. I believe that for a majority of us we all want people to succeed, to be happy, to be prosperous. We all want this for ourselves as well.

When watching a movie we all cheer for the little guy that risks it all for a dream. Yet when the movies end we all forget that we too have the same desires for our own dreams. The daily bump and grind on the treadmill of ?what is? extinguishes away any of the hopes that were sparked.

So how can this truth become a manifestation of a miracle?

With belief, with your participation I know that this can be evident in the results. I?m asking that only others that believe or even want to believe to be part of this.

With an experiment there needs to be a system of measurement right? So how can one measure a miracle?

This at the moment is how I plan on it. I want anyone interested to visit a page in my website. The link is:

On this page is a bunch of little angels I?ve made, but there?s one in particular that will be the system of measurement. A little angel with ?I Believe Miracles are Possible? in the description. I also welcome any POSITIVE feedback, ideas or suggestions

So the intention is there, the idea has been unleashed into the universe at large. Now all that needs to happen is simply the process of the miracle to unfold. Is it possible for me to remove myself from obscurity? To have my intentions realized by this message as it ripples through the universe? To have the intention return to me as the manifestation of the life that resonates as the truth of the life I choose to live?

Will you be ?a part? of this or ?apart? from the promise of a miracle in your own life? The choice is yours. As for me I already made the decision that this will reach exactly who it needs to in order for this to occur.

The truth of the matter is that if this becomes possible for me then it becomes possible for you. This may scare people because sometimes people would rather just float through life on a cloud of blame in order to dismiss the truth of what they can really be or do. I say this because that truth has been self evident in the results that my life have produced

In the next thirty days I will post the results daily and I invite you all to be part of this. In the meantime, expect nothing less then miracles!
