The Use of Biomass in Arkansas
You might not be familiar with biomass and the potential that it has to provide energy to the world, but if you live in Arkansas, you might want to read up on how biomass could affect you positively in the next few years. The use of biomass in Arkansas is small right now, but has the potential to be one of the largest resources the United States has ever seen in terms of energy created through this sustainable method.
Biomass, in its simplest form, is breaking natural resources down into their simplest state to generate electricity and renewable power for people. For example, by burning wood chippings, decaying plant matter and other natural sources, we?re able to release chemicals that can be used to produce energy.
When we think about the use of biomass in Arkansas, we can immediately see potential for growth.
Because of Arkansas? terrain and location in the U.S., there are plenty of different resources that could fuel biomass. Decaying forestry and decomposing plant matter being the largest of these naturally occurring items.According to a recent survey by the Arkansas Biomass Resource Assessment, ?An estimated 19.8 billion kWh of electricity could be generated using renewable biomass fuels in Arkansas. This is enough electricity to fully supply the annual needs of 1,979,000 average homes, or 150 percent of the residential electricity use in Arkansas.?
This number is astounding when we compare it to the amount of traditional energy that?s cast aside to make way for this renewable resource.
Who would have thought that unused wood chipping could be the biggest provider of energy for an entire state? Through the use of biomass in Arkansas, we?re able to see these numbers actually translate into environmentally saving actions. So what makes biomass such a popular method for potentially clean, safe energy in Arkansas? Well, the abundance of woodlands and agricultural landmass in Arkansas is unlike other states. Here there is much more of a wooded presence, which means that the lumber and timber industry of Arkansas is thriving. Sadly, not all of the wood collected can be used in the industry, which means that there is the potential for waste.
Through this waste, Arkansas is able to fuel another industry: the biomass industry. And though it may be small now, biomass has the potential to do great things in Arkansas. It won?t be long before this eco friendly energy is being supplied to your home.
