Libya rebels probe general's murder, NATO hits TV (AFP)
BENGHAZI, Libya (AFP) ? Libyan rebels on Saturday probed the killing of their army chief, a murder the Kadhafi regime said proved Al-Qaeda was behind the uprising, as NATO targeted the strongman's "terror broadcasts."
"The NTC has appointed an investigative committee and we will publish all the facts of this investigation," said Ali Tarhuni, who handles economic affairs for the rebel National Transitional Council.
General Abdel Fatah Yunis was the faithful right-hand man of Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi, participating in the 1969 coup that brought him to power, before defecting to the rebels fighting to oust the strongman since February.
Tarhuni said Yunis's bullet-ridden and partly burned body was found early on Friday on Benghazi's outskirts, but that the NTC had received news of his death late on Thursday when the head of a militia behind the crime confessed.
"The head of the militia is imprisoned now," Tarhuni said, adding that some of the perpetrators, who he said belonged to Jirah Ibn al-Obeidi brigade, were yet to be incarcerated, and the motive for the killing remained unclear.
"We don't know who they work for," he said.
Tripoli pinned the blame squarely on Al-Qaeda and argued that the killing exposed the impotence of the NTC.
"By this act, Al-Qaeda wanted to mark out its presence and its influence in this region" of eastern Libya controlled by the rebels, regime spokesman Mussa Ibrahim told reporters in Tripoli.
"The other members of the National Transitional Council knew about it but could not react because they are terrified of Al-Qaeda," he added.
NATO in Brussels said in a statement early on Saturday its warplanes had launched precision strikes on three Libyan television transmitter dishes to silence "terror broadcasts" on state television.
"Our intervention was necessary as TV was being used as an integral component of the regime apparatus designed to systematically oppress and threaten civilians and to incite attacks against them," it quoted alliance spokesman Colonel Roland Lavoie as saying.
"NATO conducted a precision air strike that disabled three ground-based Libyan state TV satellite transmission dishes in Tripoli," Lavoie said.
"In light of our (UN) mandate to protect civilian lives, we had to act," he said, adding that the strikes followed "careful planning to minimize the risks of casualties or long-term damage to television transmission capabilities."
An AFP journalist in Tripoli said a dozen explosions shook the Libyan capital on Friday night -- the latest of many blasts in a city which has been targeted almost daily by NATO air raids.
Yunis's death, and that of two officers with him, left the rebels facing a military leadership crisis on the same day they made fresh gains in the western Nafusa mountain range.
The United States urged the rebels to stand united and stay focused on ousting Kadhafi, and blamed the veteran Libyan leader for creating the conditions that led to the murder.
State Department spokesman Mark Toner said the rebels should "work both diligently and transparently to ensure the unity of the Libyan opposition."
"Such tragedies speak to the situation that's been created by Kadhafi and his regime. It underscores why he needs to leave power and do so immediately," said Toner.
In London, Britain's minister for the Middle East and North Africa, Alistair Burt, condemned the assassination and extended his condolences to NTC chairman Mustafa Abdel Jalil.
"We agreed that it is important that those responsible are held to account through proper judicial processes," he said.
The assassination of Yunis, Libya's former interior minister, sparked speculation that he had been killed as a traitor by one of the two warring camps or as a form of revenge for his past role in crushing the Islamists.
A senior opposition figure in the rebel capital of Benghazi accused Kadhafi of playing a role in the murder in an attempt to press rebels to back off from the strategic oil town of Brega.
Yunis was killed as he returned to Benghazi from the front line near Brega on the orders of the NTC. "Whoever took part in this crime will be brought to justice no matter who they are," Tarhuni said.
The unity of rebels in the east -- where there are more than 30 brigades -- is crucial for the many Western powers which have recognised the NTC as the sole legitimate authority in Libya.
The rebels, meanwhile, said a loan from Turkey had arrived and that they hoped to reach out with food and monetary aid to fighters and their families in the west during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan which starts next week.
Tarhuni said rebels were working hard to bring relief to people in the Nafusa mountain range where months of fighting has left families facing cash, food and fuel shortages.

Joe Walsh, a rising star in the tea party movement best known for his blistering lectures of President Barack Obama for "spending like a drunken sailor," is now being peppered with questions about his own financial responsibility after reports surfaced that he's being sued for more than $100,000 in unpaid child support.
Experts say whatever political star power the 49-year-old Republican previously emanated has been dimmed, if not extinguished, because for at least the immediate future it will be impossible for him to talk about anything other than his personal problems.
"Whenever he wants to go out and talk about the debt limit, they are going to want to talk about whether (he) is a deadbeat dad," said Kent Redfield, a professor emeritus of politics at the University of Illinois-Springfield. "His individual problems become the story and he never gets to another issue."
That means that whenever he appears on cable and network television shows to talk about the increasingly rancorous debt ceiling debate, the hosts now will invariably want to know about what is in his thick divorce file, Redfield said.
Redfield and others say it is all but impossible for politician to shake questions about whether or not they've provided for their families once a story like the one in Thursday's Chicago Sun-Times is published.
"Child support is always devastating to politicians when it (such a story) comes out, because the public says, `How can you manage our finances when you can't manage your own?'" said Larry Sabato, a political scientist and director of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics.
One tea party activist, though, said the story will not hurt Walsh in the movement because they will simply see it as a politically motivated attack.
"The public understands this, they see Joe Walsh stick up for people and now all of a sudden this appears in a newspaper," said Catherina Wojtowicz, of the Chicago Tea Patriots. "It's a smear piece because he's speaking out on behalf of the people."
That was Walsh's point when in a prepared statement he characterized the story about his ex-wife's effort seeking $117,437 in back child support and interest as a "hit piece."
He suggested it was no accident that the paper would run the story about a marriage that ended eight years ago and a court case filed nearly eight months ago just as lawmakers are in the middle of contentious debate over the debt ceiling.
"I am the tip of the spear in this current debate, and I will be attacked," he wrote in a statement issued Thursday morning.
Walsh, whose campaign was marked by allegations of financial mismanagement, said he thought he and his ex-wife were coming to an agreement on the money owed, according to a February court filing. And in the statement, he said he has been "trying to resolve this issue since January in a court of law ..."
The statement does not include any mention of how much he has paid in child support, only that he has "always given everything I have to meet my financial obligations to my children ..."
Nor does Walsh, whose website includes a video in which he accuses Obama of spending money "like a drunken sailor for three years," address allegations made by his ex-wife that at the time Walsh was not keeping up with his child support he took two international vacations with his girlfriend.
Walsh's attorney, R. Steven Polachek, denied that the congressman owed $117,437 in back child support and interest and said the amount was much less.
"I dispute that he owes the child support that she's claiming or anywhere near that amount," Polachek told the paper. "Joe Walsh hasn't been a big-time wage-earner politician until recently ? he's had no more problems with child support than any other average guy."
But Laura Walsh's attorney, Jack Coladarci, said that Walsh was paying about $1,000 less than he was ordered to between November 2005 and March 2008, and then stopped paying the entire $2,135 he owed every month from April 2008 until December 2010.
He said once Walsh began serving in Congress, earning $175,000 a year, he started making payments of $2,164 a month ? after Coladarci contacted the congressional office to advise the office of a court order to withhold that amount from his paycheck.
How this all plays out when Walsh runs for re-election remains to be seen. Despite disclosures about a 2008 home foreclosure, his divorce, traffic citations for not having car insurance, bounced checks and a lawsuit by a former campaign manager who alleged Walsh owed him $,20,000, Walsh was elected to Congress.
But Walsh was not all that popular among moderate Republicans, who often referred to himself as a "tea partier first and a Republican second."
Today, Republican officials in Illinois say they still support Walsh. At the same time, they are critical of some of the things he's said ? particularly when in his video he scolded Obama to "quit lying" about the debt issue.
"We don't need that kind of rhetoric with the president of the United States," said Pat Brady, the GOP state party chairman.
And Sabato said that it may not matter what he's said and what's been reported about his divorce the next time around. Thanks to the redrawing of congressional boundaries in Illinois by Democrats ? since been challenged with a lawsuit by Republicans ? Walsh was mapped out of his district.

His legal team says that despite that promise, Zagel???s actions did not allow their client to make those points.
?The Court explicitly told defense counsel that the only path to acquittal was through Blagojevich's testimony.? Yet when Blagojevich finally took the stand, he was bamboozled by the Court's rulings and assertions throughout the trial,? the motion reads.
The motion also references an infamous, but inflammatory, phrase Blagojevich is heard saying on tape in reference to his assurance that the Senate seat will yield positive results. His legal team says one juror downloaded the phrase into his cell phone and used it as a ringtone throughout the trial, an action that said should have led Zagel to dismiss the juror immediately.
The high number of complaints in the documents is not unusual in such an appeal, says Shari Seidman Diamond, a law professor at Northwestern University in Chicago.
